THE REALLY BIG SLEEP

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I guess I was tired.  Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I guess I, BK, was tired, for I slept over twelve hours yesterday.  My head hit the pillow around eleven o’clock and I remember thinking “I hope it doesn’t take to long to fall asleep” – and that’s all I remember so I guess it didn’t.  I didn’t arise until almost noon.  I’m still not quite caught up, but it was definitely helpful and I definitely felt better.

Once up, I did some work on the computer, answered a lot of e-mails, we got all the Falling in Love CDs shipped, and then I went and had some lunch.  I had a cup of chili and then a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich with no fries or onion rings.  I then did some banking, then picked up my suede coat, which I had to have repaired.  Some stitching had come undone on the left side armpit and there was quite a hole growing there, which was only going to get worse.  I love the coat, so I didn’t want to just toss it, but it couldn’t be sewn up or anything.  I found a suede and leather repair shop five minutes from here – excellent Yelp reviews so I took it over there three weeks ago.  The owner is one of those crusty old guys.  He fretted over it, said the other side was about to suffer a similar fate, went back and forth about what could be done, fretted some more, then told me what it would cost and to not call him for six weeks.  I said fine.  He finished in three and it’s like a brand new coat again – what a great job he did.

Then I came home.  The helper came by and we did some work here, then I had to read some liner notes for our next release (finally a break from writing them – someone else asked if they could and I gratefully said yes), had some telephonic conversations, and then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched two motion pictures on Netflix.  The first motion picture was entitled Not Safe for Work, a “thriller” set in an office building.  Shot in early 2012 but carrying a 2013 copyright, it went direct to video in March of this year.  I don’t know who they thought was going to see this film – it has a no-star cast, its director has some good credits but wouldn’t draw a fly to a theater, and the writers aren’t really known.  Then there’s the plot.  Then there’s the casting of the lead – whatever one thinks of this fellow as an actor, he’s just wrong for this film.  The fact that it barely runs sixty-eight minutes sans credits will tell you all you need to know.

Then I watched a motion picture entitled Last Passenger, a film from the United Kingdom, another thriller, this one set on a train.  There is a villain, but we never see him and we don’t know anything about him – ever.  It’s the director’s first film – certainly he is influenced by Mr. Spielberg in just about every way, but he gets the job done and he probably has some talent.  The actors are all very good, it has a tight running time and it wasn’t unpleasant.  The writing isn’t very good, and ultimately without a real villain presence one’s involvement is less than it should be.  The score is a little John Williams, a little Jerry Goldsmith, and uses one of the movements of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite for its opening and several other cues.

After that, I went to Gelson’s and got a little chicken noodle soup and some fruit, came home and ate it, did some more work on the computer and that was that.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after another good night’s sleep.  The main order of the day is giving notes on our Indiegogo video so we can get that wrapped up and up and running.  It will probably take me several hours to do so.  The other main order of the day is to finish an edit road map on our next release – the release was actually ready to go months ago, but then more music for one of its scores was discovered, so I had to listen, figure out where things went, and now I have to type it up and get it to the person who put it all together.  Then I have to adjust my notes and then we can finally get it in for approval.  I’ll eat, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and I’ll add one more song set-up to our holiday show, then I’ll relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same and then I think I’m probably seeing something over the weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, give notes, do a road map, eat, hopefully pick up packages, adjust notes, add a song set-up, and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like.  So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have gotten the really big sleep, which I so desperately needed.
