ZIP AND ZING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the meddlesome cough has abated somewhat and that is a good thing because frankly I was so irritated I was in danger of eating the head of a chicken.  It probably helped that I took Nyquil before bed, slept nine good hours and am probably finally caught up on my sleep.  This is like a weather report, isn’t it?  This has no oomph, no zip, no zing, this is just laying there like so much fish is what this is.  We need to start off with a bang but if I did start off with a bang I might cough and then we’d be back where we began.

Yesterday was a day that had some zip and some zing to it, and nothing really annoying happened, so that’s always appreciated.  In fact, the day started off with a bang, a telephonic call from Richard Sherman telling me how much he loved the Sandy CD and how much he liked my songs.  He was thrilled with the way our song, Two Roads, came out, and his favorite on the CD was Three Acts.  He especially liked that one because he felt it was completely unique in the way it tells its story.  Needless to say, it was a real treat to hear that.  I did some work on the computer, listened to some music, and then I moseyed on over to work on the Indiegogo video.  I was very prepared and it really only took fifteen minutes to finesse it – I cut almost thirty seconds out of it, which really tightened everything up beautifully.  Now she’ll add the graphics and get the music put in and then she’ll fix the sound levels and we’ll be able to go live with the campaign by mid-week I should think.

After that, I picked up no packages, then came home.  I took care of a few little odds and ends and then watched about half of a documentary on Netflix about Ray Harryhausen.  Then it was time to mosey on over to The Smoke House for a dinner.  I had a shrimp cocktail, only one tiny piece of garlic cheese bread, a cup of clam chowder, and a pulled pork sandwich and fries – I didn’t eat too many of the latter, so all in all, considering it was my only food o’ the day, it wasn’t too bad.  Then I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched one of my favorite motion pictures – I’ve had the import Blu-ray for several months but was waiting until I was just in the perfect mood for it and last night was the night.  The motion picture was Sullivan’s Travels, my favorite Preston Sturges motion picture and one of my favorite pictures of all time.  At times, the dialogue actually takes your breath away it is so brilliant.  Sturges’s way with a phrase or a quip was completely unique.  But this film, for me, is unique in his canon as it’s not only riotously funny but it’s also intensely moving.  Joel McCrea was one of the great leading men who is almost virtually forgotten today, unlike his compatriots, Cary Grant, James Stewart and others of that ilk.  McCrea could do anything, from drama to comedy to westerns.  He had a great voice and great presence.  And he has his match in Veronica Lake, who is just so adorable and sexy and funny and beautiful and endearing in this film.  It is her finest performance.  The pace of the film is wonderful (it’s barely ninety minutes) and I never tire of watching it.  The transfer is decent but one hopes that a new scan will be done at some point, because it should look stunning.  This is highly recommended by the likes of me for those who have multi-region players.  If not, you can still get the DVD from Criterion from years ago.

After that, I just played on the computer and relaxed a bit.

Today, I plan on relaxing, may try to do a jog if I’m up to it, and then I’m seeing a club act at The Federal, where I’ll also dine.

Tomorrow morning I’ll be up at six to announce our new title, which I suspect will sell very quickly, which is why I upped our usual 1000 to 1200.  It’s a thrill to be able to do this one, that’s all I can tell you.  The rest of the week is meetings and meals, a work session, seeing a couple of things, Thanksgiving dinner with Barry Pearl and his ever-lovin’ Cindy Dellinger and then gearing up for our Kritzerland rehearsal week and the final month of the year.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, maybe jog, relax, and see a club act.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them.  So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall hopefully awaken with proper amounts of zip and zing.
