December 3, 2014:

WHAT BEGAN AS ONE OF THOSE DAYS TURNED OUT FINE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this month is flying by, like a gazelle with an Oedipus complex.  Can you believe it’s already the third?  And might I just say that the second was one of THOSE days?  Yes, Virginia, the second was one of THOSE days.  But in the end everything was fine so one can’t really mind a few irritants along the way to fine.

I only got a little less than five hours of sleep, that was irritant one.  I had to be up at a certain time for a visitor coming at ten in the morning.  He never showed because I got the day wrong.  We’d originally talked about Tuesday but at some point, for some stupid reason, I thought Wednesday would be better.  Once that was all sorted out, I went out to the garage to be on my way to our meeting at The Smoke House.  I was so looking forward to a wonderful but light meal there.  Alas, it was not meant to be.  I pushed the button on the car door and nothing happened.  I used the button on the fob and nothing happened.  I finally used the key thing and got the door opened, pushed the start button and was greeted with utter silence.  Yes, the car battery was dead as a doornail.  It’s just over a year old and I got it from the dealer so I knew it was under warranty.  But that’s the third time a battery has gone dead in this car and that’s not right.  So, I called the meeting folks and they came to get me.  Meanwhile, I was going to wait to call the auto club, but decided to call the dealer.  I got a great guy on the phone and he said he’d come to me, bring me a loaner and get the car in for servicing, and that he’d do a thorough check to see why this is happening.  Obviously I don’t have to pay for the new battery.

The meeting people arrived and we went to Jerry’s Deli, the one place I did NOT want to go.  It was fine, though – I had a quesadilla and nothing else.  We got everything done that needed doing, then I came home.  A little while later the loaner arrived – a top-of-the-line brand new Infinity Q50.  I wonder if they’d do an even swap?  Maybe not.  So, the guy jump-started my car and off he went, and off I went to the mail place, where I picked up some mail and a couple of packages, then did some banking, then came home.  This car drives like a dream, but boy is it expensive, so it should drive like a dream.  From about eleven-thirty on, the predicted “storm” arrived, so we had pretty steady rain – not torrential rain, as predicted – all day long until it stopped around seven.  It’s been raining on and off for the last hour or so.  I did a bit of writing, then I went to Gelson’s and got some chicken noodle soup and some melon balls for my snack of the evening.  I also got ingredients for more Wacky Noodles, which I shall most likely make this very day.  I can either make the bow tie version or the wide egg noodle version – both are really good, but each has its own vibe and xylophone.  I ate the soup and balls whilst sitting on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Quatermass Xperiment.  I have always liked the three Quatermass films, but especially this first one.  It’s very well directed by Val Guest, and once you get used to Brian Donleavy, it’s just a really solid film.  The movie really belongs to Richard Wadsworth as the returning man from space, Victor Karoon.  He has not one line of dialogue in the film, but his performance is the heart of it.  He’s morphing into a creature for the entire film, but the range of emotions that play across his face and his body language is amazing.   The rest of the cast is serviceable – for some reason, the American leading lady is dubbed in this version – not sure why.  Apparently her real voice is in SOME version – according to one of the extras, the person interviewed thought her real voice was in the uncut British version – but that’s what we have here, so maybe her real voice is in the cut American version, which isn’t included.  The music by James Bernard is a plus and I just really like the whole feel of the film.  The transfer is probably fine – some of the opticals are the worst I’ve ever seen, and there are some scratches and white dirt, but in certain shots the detail is quite pleasing.  It’s just inconsistent as all get out and I think we know just how inconsistent all get out is.

After that, I just did some more work on the computer, took a nice, hot shower and that was that.

Today, I have the visitor at eleven, and directly after that we’re doing a Costco run – I literally have nothing in the house so we’ll stock up on some stuff and maybe even get a jump on the Christmas Eve Do party stuff.  After that, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, I’ll eat some Wacky Noodles, then I have to do a very quick bit for our radio show – this Sunday’s show is about the Sandy Bainum CD – Donald did a long interview with her, so I’m just going to say a couple of things to introduce it and then it will be the Sandy show.

Tomorrow, I have a meeting and meal at noon, then we have our second Kritzerland rehearsal in the evening again.  Friday I’m hoping will be fairly free, Saturday is our stumble-through and then some of us will eat a little something, then Sunday is sound check and show.  Then on Monday, I will be another year older and wiser.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a visitor, do a Costco run, hopefully pick up some packages, eat some Wacky Noodles, do a quick bit for the radio show, and then relax.

Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like.  So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that a day that began as one of THOSE days ended up being a perfectly fine day.
