FINISHING THE BOOK 15 – THE RETURN OF ADRIANA HOFSTETTER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, late this evening, just prior to starting these here notes, I finished book number fifteen.  I have been demonic in the writing of this, pace-wise.  I started out with twelve pages and I kept to that every single day, sometimes writing up to fourteen or fifteen.  There were reasons for it, mostly having to do with the set-up of the book and my love for my leading character.  When I got up yesterday, I futzed and finessed everything before leaving for rehearsal, but only had time to write a couple of new lines.

Our first Inside Out music rehearsal went well, although we didn’t have our full cast.  It was fun hearing our wonderful ladies learn their music and I think this cast is just going to be terrific.  I wanted to make sure that each role had a unique and distinctive look and sound and I think we’ve achieved that.  I also met with our set designer and he liked my little idea – we have so little money, though, I don’t know how any of that’s going to turn out just yet.  We had Shelly Markham teaching the music.  For the show itself, for budgetary reasons, we are using tracks.  But the tracks sound really good.  Not really ideal but we do what we must do.  While a good number of nice folks contributed to the indiegogo campaign, it was a bit of a bust unfortunately, although there’s still a few days left and we’re all hoping that some last-minute folks come in.

After rehearsal, I went to have some lunch.  I had a chili, cheese and onion omelet and a bagel.  Service was slow and terrible because – wait for it – apparently on Martin Luther King day everyone wants to go to Jerry’s Deli.  And for the second time in two weeks I lost a little charm thing I carry in my pocket.  I didn’t know that until late last night, but boy was I irritated.  Both times at Jerry’s.  The one from two weeks ago I’d had in my pocket for at least five years.  I’m sure when I pulled out my wallet or cash it came out with them, although why that would suddenly happen I have no idea.  Then yesterday, I was buying a little pastry at the front counter and pulled out cash to pay for it and I’m sure that’s when it happened.  It was probably there on the counter, but heaven forbid they should just save it for me when they found it.  I mean, I will check but I just don’t understand why it’s a problem all of a sudden.  Luckily, I have many of the same charm in a box so I just replaced it again.  And I kind of like the replacement better anyway.

Then I came home and began writing.  I basically only stopped for occasional breaks and a couple of snacks.  I wrote and wrote and wrote and at eleven twenty-four I wrote the last line of the book.  Whether it remains the last or not remains to be seen, but write it I did.  All told, it wasn’t the longest writing binge I’ve ever done (I believe that was on one of the memoirs – maybe thirty-eight pages in a row) – yesterday’s page count was around twenty-six.  I was absolutely exhausted as I wrote the final line.  The final chapters of an Adriana Hofstetter book are always time-consuming and not as easy as what comes before, because it’s all the explanations about everything and you have to be really logical and methodical about every detail.  I’m not really writing these for an adult audience, but I do like them to be believable – I strive for that and hopefully with the finale of this book I’ve succeeded.

Today, I won’t have time to do any futzing and finessing before leaving for rehearsal.  But once I’m done at two, I’m coming right home to do just that.  I’m sure with twenty-six pages there will be quite a bit of futzing and finessing to do, but I’ll do it, then print out the final eighty pages.  I’ll go get the Xeroxed then take them directly to Muse Margaret.  Then I’ll go to Jerry’s for a sandwich and I will inquire as to whether they found what I dropped there, but it’s doubtful and it doesn’t really matter since I’ve already replaced it.  Then I’ll relax and hopefully hear from Muse Margaret.

The rest of the week is Inside Out rehearsals and some meetings and meals and attending to a lot of stuff that I need to take care of.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, rehearse, futz and finesse, print out pages, Xerox pages, deliver pages to Muse Margaret, eat and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: For those who’ve either seen musicals that have used tracks or been in them, what do you think of them and how was it to work with them?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that I have finished book number fifteen.
