January 14, 2015:

THE CROWDED PLATE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, what a busy but productive day was yesterday.  For example, yesterday was both busy and productive as well as productive and busy.  Even when it wasn’t busy it was productive and, conversely, even when it wasn’t productive it was busy.  I think I’m beginning to get the drift and hopefully you are.

Yesterday was both productive and busy.  I got up after almost eight hours of sleep, which was neither productive nor busy.  Once up I tackled the busywork first.  That took a little over an hour, but I got it all done and sent it on its way, so that was one less thing to worry about and have on my plate.  Then I futzed and finessed for about an hour, after which I went and had a patty melt and no fries or onion rings.  Once back home, I began writing new pages.  During the course of the afternoon I wrote about six or seven pages.  I also finished choosing all the songs for the Jerome Kern and gathered all the sheet music and got everything to all singers and musical directors.  We have a wonderful cast for the show, including Kimberly Hessler, Damon Kirsche, Madison Claire Parks, Jeffrey Todd and Shannon Warne.  Waiting to hear on the guest star.  And the great John Boswell on piano.

So, by the end of the afternoon I had my plate cleaned of many things that were on it, and that was a good thing.  I then needed a break, so I watched a motion picture on Netflix entitled The One I Love, a film directed by Charlie MacDowell (Malcolm’s son) and starring Mark Duplass and Elizabeth Moss.  I really didn’t want to watch it, but I wanted to see Miss Moss in something other than Mad Men.  After the first ten minutes I wanted to run from the room screaming, and I almost shut it off, but then lo and behold it got quirky and interesting and I ended up really liking it a lot.  It does fall into the Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze school, but I have never liked any of their films, but this one got to me.  A lot of that is due to the two lead performances (this film is basically two people – the only other actor in any kind of role is Ted Danson and he’s onscreen for five minutes).  I didn’t know Mr. Duplass, but he’s very good, but it’s Miss Moss whose film it is.  She is absolutely brilliant in it and without spoilers I cannot tell you why – in a different world she would be nominated for Best Actress – she’s that good.  But the film was one of those Sundance things that has played only festivals, with only a tiny release in theaters that netted only around $500,000 in grosses.  I’m sure it was low budget, but that is a very bad gross considering the releasing company only gets a fraction of that money.  In any case, if I have piqued your interest with this film, my strong advice is to read absolutely nothing about it – go into it knowing nothing because that’s the best way to see it.  Highly recommended by the likes of me.

After that, I wrote an additional seven pages for almost fourteen in total.  I began a new chapter, and will continue apace on the ‘morrow.

After that, I got yet another thing off my crowded plate – I did the edit road map for our first Kritzerland release of 2015 by a composer who doesn’t sell well but is a particular favorite of mine.

Today, I will futz and finesse and write until I have to leave for a lunch meeting at one.  Once that’s done, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, then come home and write some more, relax, watch something, and write.

Tomorrow, I get Muse Margaret the latest batch of pages.  Then the rest of the day as well as Friday, Saturday and Sunday is basically writing.  If I keep this pace, I could be done by early next week, presuming Muse Margaret likes what she reads.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, futz and finesse, write, have a lunch meeting, hopefully pick up packages, write, relax, and write.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like.  So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have removed some things from my crowded plate.
