KRITZERLAND AT STERLING’S 54

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, Kritzerland at Sterling’s 54 was about as perfect a show as we’ve ever done.  It was just the perfect cast for these perfect songs, and having John Boswell is always the icing on the cake.  I was very proud of all our singers – Kimberly Hessler, Jean Louisa Kelly, Damon Kirsche, Madison Claire Parks, Jeffrey Todd and the lovelier than lovely Andrea Marcovicci – she was accompanied by her long-time musical director, Shelly Markham.   We had a pretty full house and a very responsive audience.  We had virtually no lyric flubs and everyone was at the top of their game from start to finish.  Happily, the patter got very big laughs throughout, with the biggest laugh of the evening being at Guy Haines’s expense.  I mentioned that he’d recorded Sure Thing with Kerry Butler but that he couldn’t be with us because on Monday nights he does clog dancing to the music of Michael John LaChiusa.  And the other big laugh was my little précis about actress and violinist Odette Myrtil.  I had a grand time.

We had some fun folks in our audience, including Patricia Ward Kelly, whose husband Gene Kelly was a fervent fan of Mr. Kern.  Film composer John Scott was with us, as was Richard and Elizabeth Sherman, our very own Sami Staitman was with us as was Rob Stevens.  Adrienne Visnic, one of our Inside Out gals came, singer Kevin Earley, who’ll be doing our next show, wonderful kid performer Sydney DiMaria came with her mom and sister, cousins Dee Dee and Alan and neighbors Tony Slide and Bob Gitt and other lovely folks.   Afterwards, four of us went over to Little Toni’s, where I had a coldcuts submarine sandwich and a salad.

Prior to all that, I’d gotten close to eight hours of sleep – it took quite a while to fall asleep, and then I was up in the middle of the night for a couple of hours, then went back to sleep till eleven.  Once up, I answered e-mails, did some banking, entered all of proofer one’s fixes, and relaxed until it was time to leave for the sound check.

Today, I’m up early and to rehearsal by ten.  I have stuff to do afterwards, and a rehearsal to go to in the early evening for the Robby Awards show – Sami and John Massey are doing I’m Past My Prime in the show.  At some point I’ll find time to eat and go to the bank again.

The rest of the week is crazy with rehearsals and meetings and meals and paper tech and tech and run-throughs and getting our little show tight and good.  The weekend days are very long.  If the timing works, then on Sunday after rehearsal I’ll take the Staitmans to Genghis Cohen to celebrate Sami’s fifteenth birthday – really unbelievable that I’ve been working with her since she was twelve.  Then we go into our final phase, with two dress/techs, two previews, then opening night.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up early, rehearse, bank, hopefully pick up some packages, rehearse and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: Favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber songs.  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that Kritzerland at Sterling’s 54 was a wonderful show.
