THE MIRROR AND THE PHOTOGRAPH: A CONUNDRUM

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is late and I must write these here notes in a hurry for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon and I must get some semblance of beauty sleep or I shall look like an elderly Jew, which, of course, I am.  When I was a wee bairn, I used to put on the affectation that I was an elderly Jew.  It was most amusing to one and all and also all and one.  Now that I AM an elderly Jew it isn’t quite so amusing.  I don’t really feel elderly or all that Jewish, but truth is truth.  When I look in the mirror I see a young-looking nice fellow.  When I look at photographs that are taken any closer than ten feet away I see something wholly other.  That is the conundrum of the mirror and the photograph.  The Mirror and the Photograph: A Conundrum – that’s the title of my next novel.

Yesterday was a trifle of a day.  I don’t really remember much of it, actually.  I know I got eight hours of sleep and was up by ten-thirty.  I know I did some work on the computer and I know I had nothing whatsoever to eat save for an apple.  I know I did some banking and I know I picked up no packages.  I know I then spent four hours getting everything for the packaging of our next release in order – this was the hardest ever, due to a humungous amount of information that had to be gathered, with very little studio paperwork.  The main portion took about two-and-a-half hours – that required noting a whole slew of songwriters, and then noting the publishing information for all the songs.  It took a bit of crosschecking but I finally got all that done.  Then came four songs that had been recorded but not used in the final cut of the film involved.  I identified one singer on two tracks right away, so that was good.  I have a suspicion who one other singer is, but without paperwork it’s only a suspicion.  I think the final singer is obvious, but I will have one other person listen and see if he agrees.  I then got all of that stuff to our designer for designing.  And that was about it, day-wise.

Then I moseyed on over to the theater to see Inside Out after a four-day layoff.  It was quite the strange performance – low energy, timing off and therefore a very quiet audience for almost the entirety of act one.  Only two people sort of escaped unscathed, otherwise we had low vocal energy a lot of the time, cue pickups missed, lines missed, fumfers galore.  Happily, act two perked up and our two showstoppers got their usual reaction, so that brought some energy back to the show, and there were some nice laughs in act two, which told me that it wasn’t really a dead audience.  We had half a house.

Afterwards, a few of us went to dine.  I hadn’t eaten anything but the apple so I had eggs benedict, the table shared some onion rings, and then I did something I never do – had a hot fudge sundae.  While not a patch on the butt cheeks of the glorious C.C. Brown’s, it was okay – fudge wasn’t hot, of course, but lots o’ whipped cream.  I shared it with the table so hopefully it didn’t do too much damage.

Today, I have to leave in the morning, but will return at noon and just relax until it’s time to go to the theater.  I’ll have something light to eat in the morning, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and I’ll do the show order and write the commentary.  I also have to start writing the patter for Sandy’s new act.

Tomorrow, I’ll attend the matinee (after this week I’ll be scarcer in terms of seeing the show) then come directly home for our annual Oscar Bash, the only place to be for the Oscars.  It will be wild and wooly and also wooly and wild.  Be there or be round.  Next week I have writing to do, magic to do, and to do to do – meetings and meals, a few things to see and I will definitely be coifed by Teddy.

Let’s put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s dance the Hora and the Monkey, for today is the birthday of dear reader Matthew.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader Matthew.  On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER MATTHEW!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, leave, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, come home, relax, see the evening show (understudy on) and then go out after.  Today’s topic of discussion: Who are your picks for the Oscars?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, whilst I try to understand the conundrum of the mirror and the photograph.
