BRUISED FRUIT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle trying to do common core math.  It’s quite late and therefore I really must write these here notes in a hurry, as I only got about three hours of sleep.

Yesterday was a day in which I kept going on only three hours of sleep.  I finally got out of bed at nine-thirty, got ready and then drove to Sandy Bainum’s home environment in the Hills of Beverly.  We ran her entire act start to finish.  She’s still getting lyrics and patter down, so there wasn’t much for me to do.  When we got to Here on Earth, I staged it, which was fun.  We fixed some tempos, and that was that.  Sandy’s lovely mom is visiting, so we all went to Nate ‘n’ Al’s, which is only a five-minute drive from her house.

If I heard right, I don’t think Sandy had ever had pastrami, so she had a half version of what I order – the New York – lean pastrami on rye with cole slaw and Russian dressing on the sandwich.  She seemed to like it even though she couldn’t even finish the half.  I, on the other hand, finished the whole sandwich, plus had some kishka, which was also very good.

Then I came right home, where I buckled down, Winsocki and did corrections on the two charts that had been sent to me – I did that and then e-mailed the corrections to the fellow who did them.  He also sent me two more, which I’ll proof and correct this morning before I go.  Then I’ve got at least three more songs for him to do charts for.  Then I buckled down, Winsocki even more and finished choosing all the songs for the Kritzerland show, except for two.  I’ll figure those out today.  We have a fun cast for this one – kind of a weird layout for us in terms of guys, gals and kids – our one guy is our very own Robert Yacko, we only have two gals this time, Dana Meller and Brittney Bertier – both are from Inside Out, Brittney being one of our talented understudies.  The kids are Jenna, Sami and little Hadley Miller.  Our special guest is JoAnne Worley and Guy Haines will probably join us, too.  Our musical director is Alby Potts, who’s our MD on Inside Out.  So, two more songs and we’re all set, and I already have ninety percent of the music and some of the singers have already gotten their stuff.  So, that’s a big load off.  Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched two more episodes of House of Cards, season three.  It’s a bit like season two – some very good episodes, and then what are, for me, some irritating subplots that just don’t really do anything that interesting.  In the two episodes I watched, there were certainly some interesting scenes and some very good acting, but, like season two, the storytelling is just erratic.  We’ll see how the rest plays out.

After that, I went to Gelson’s to get a few little snacks – small things of rice and peas, Chinese slaw and a bit of seafood salad.  I came home and ate it all up.  Yesterday was, I think, the first day in months and months where I did not have anything for dessert save for an apple.  I’ve been buying the most amazing apples – a brand called Envy – they are huge, delicious and never, for whatever reason, bruised.  I do not like bruised fruit.  I know that’s quite a thing to admit on a public website, but I have always been known for my candor and also my ebb.  Bruised Fruit – that’s the title of my next novel.  Speaking of my next novel, I also proofed the first thirty pages of the final designed book.  This book begins without a chapter heading and apparently however Grant imported that six page prologue or whatever it is, it didn’t bring in any of the italics, but I caught all of them so that’s easy to fix.  As soon as I got to chapter one, all italics were there.  I must say that thus far, other than the little italics thing, I have found 0 mistakes, which is a first.

Today, I’ll be up by ten, I’ll proof and correct the two new charts and get whatever those fixes are to the guy who did them, and I’ll also send him the remaining stuff to do.  Then at noon I’ll head over to Sandy’s to rehearse.  I’m sure we’ll eat something after.  Hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and then I have lots of ALS stuff to do.  After all that, I’m sure I’ll relax and watch more House of Cards.

Tomorrow I’m going to try and see Teddy – my hair is really long now and completely unruly.  Thursday we have another Sandy rehearsal, and she tells Lanny and I that she’s treating us to a foot rub at a nearby place on Beverly Drive.  I’m all up for that, baby.  Friday we begin our final weekend of performances for Inside Out.  Boy has this run gone quickly – it’s really hard to believe it will be over on Sunday.  So, we play on Friday night, then on Saturday day we have a band rehearsal for Sandy’s show, then we play our evening performance, then Sunday I have a book signing at the Paperback Book Show in Glendale, after which I’ll head right to the theater for our closing matinee.  We won’t even have a minute to hang out after the show, as we have to run to The Federal to do our sound check.  Lanny and the band will be there at four and can get all their stuff blended and balanced, then we’ll arrive about four-thirty and do thirty minutes’ worth of sound check.  Then it’s show time.  I think we’re going to have a nice crowd.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do corrections, rehearse, eat, hopefully pick up packages, prepare the eBlast for Wednesday’s CD announcement and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What TV series’ that you loved suddenly do what they call “jumping the shark” – a great show that suddenly loses its way?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall begin the writing of Bruised Fruit.
