LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE TO TELL THE TRUTH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, did you ever hear the expression let sleeping dogs lie?  Someone said it recently and I thought to myself, “Myself, what does that MEAN exactly?  Why would a sleeping dog have the need to lie rather than tell the truth?  Or can dogs only lie when they’re sleeping and only tell the truth when they’re awake?  And if the damn dog is sleeping how can it lie OR tell the truth?  To tell the truth, I don’t have a clew.  That reminds me of that fun game show, To Tell the Truth.  Why don’t we have fun TV games shows anymore?  Why don’t we have hosts like Bud Collyer anymore?  Now, while the sleeping dogs are telling untruths, I will tell the truth about To Tell the Truth.  Did you know, for example, that in one form or another, To Tell the Truth was on the air from 1956 to 2001 – not straight through, mind you, but still a helluva run.  Did you know that favorite game show host Garry Moore, who hosted I’ve Got a Secret also hosted one of the versions of To Tell the Truth?  And then there was a game show host called Bill Cullen.  He was not only a host of various shows, he was also a panelist on both I’ve Got a Secret and To Tell the Truth, and he also was a guest host on the latter.  What a nostalgia-ridden paragraph this is.  And why the HELL am I talking about game shows and game show hosts?  Oh, yes, because the damn sleeping dogs are lying through their sleeping teeth.

Yesterday was a day in which I had allergy problems.  I did, however, manage to get over ten hours of blessed sleep, thanks to a shot of Ny-Quil before bedtime.  Once up, I was really congested and groggy for about two hours.  Once I felt a bit better, then I went and had a cup of chicken soup and a turkey sandwich on the rye bread.  Then I came home, did some work on the computer, got ready, and then moseyed on over to Sandy Bainum’s digs for a housewarming partay.

There were lots of people there – I had not a clew as to who most of them were or that she knew so many people in LA.  But, Doug Haverty was there with his ever-lovin’ Dorathy, and Adryan Russ was there, as was Inside Out cast member Adrienne Visnic.  Lanny Meyers was playing the piano and we also had a nice chat.  Andrea Marcovicci was there for a bit and I knew a handful of other folks, a couple of whom seemed to know I’d won the Mac Award, which was nice.  I stayed for about ninety minutes, but was just feeling very logey so I took my leave and my leave I took.  I didn’t eat anything at all, even though the food looked excellent.  I stopped at my local CVS and got some more Airborne and Sambucol tablets, picked up some low-cal, low-fat ice cream and came home.  The ice cream was a new flavor from Dreyers – called Drumstick – like the Drumstick ice cream cones.  They have two different kinds – one full fat full calorie and the one that I got.  I quite liked the flavor.  Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the first forty minutes of a 2014 film on Netflix entitled The November Man, starring Pierce Brosnan.  It’s one of those one size fits all thrillers you’ve seen a million times – not one frame of originality.  I’ll see if I can finish it at some point.  After that, I kind of got a fun idea for a song and I did a bit of work on it.  It would be for the one-person show I’m working on for Sami.  We shall see how it progresses, but one way or the other, the idea of it will stick.

Today, I’ll be up early because the Piano Man is coming back to make some adjustments to the new hammers – a few of the hammers aren’t quite centered on the strings (we knew this would happen) and he has to adjust those five or six things.  Then I’ll probably grab a sandwich or something, and then we have our first Kritzerland rehearsal.  After that, I go directly to The Federal to see Kevin Earley do his cabaret act.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, our second Kritzerland rehearsal, our stumble-through, sound check and show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up early for piano work, eat, rehearse and see a cabaret show.  Today’s topic of discussion: What were your favorite game shows when you were growing up, and who was your favorite game show host?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall let sleeping dogs lie to their hearts’ content, to tell the truth.
