A SLIGHT HURRY WITH AN EDGE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is once again late and I must once again write these here notes in a hurry, although it’s not as late as it was last night so I don’t have to write them in quite such a hurry, only a slight hurry with an edge.  I enjoy writing in a slight hurry with an edge, don’t you?  You know what’s fairly amazing to me?  Well, I’ll tell you what’s fairly amazing to me because why should I keep such things from dear readers like yourselves?  What’s fairly amazing to me is that I have sit here like so much fish writing these here notes for FOURTEEN YEARS, every night, like clockwork.  That is either a pretty interesting feat or insanity.  You decide.  In any case, here I sit like so much fish, writing these here notes in a slight hurry with and edge.

Yesterday was another one of those days when I only got about seven hours of sleep despite sleeping until eleven because I didn’t get to sleep until four due to a full cranium of stuff.  And I had some fun dreams that were quite enjoyably enjoyable and I had some truly odd dreams that were quite irritating and disgustingly disgusting.  I would like not to be having those kinds of dreams.  Once up, I did the usual morning things, such as the brushing of the teeth, the answering of the e-mails, the having of the telephonic calls, and then I moseyed on over to Jerry’s Deli for my predictably predictable meal – this one consisting of a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and a cup of chili.  Then I picked up no packages or mail (annoying) and then came straight home in a crooked kind of way.

Once home, I did some work at the piano, making a couple of teeny-tiny adjustments in the new song.  Then Sami and mom arrived for our work session, which lasted about and hour-and-forty-five minutes.  Sami was in good form, much more relaxed with the monologues, had obviously been working on them, and the more we do them the better they are and now it’s just about slowing down a little, savoring the stories, figuring out the beat changes, a lot of which will come when I add the staging in the May workshop.  Her voice sounds really good now.  We decided to drop the key of one song a half step and since I knew that was an option I already have the music in that key.  That particular song will be moving to a new place in the show – I’d placed it second to last for no particular reason, but it will come at least two or three positions before that.  I need to still write the monologue for one song, and then the big monologue that will wrap the show up and lead us to the final number.  I’m really enjoying the ride so far, but we’ve only just begun, as Paul Williams once said, and I’m sure it will be a lot of hard but rewarding work as we mush on.

Then I watched a bit of a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled God Told Me To, a sublimely wacky Larry Cohen movie that I’m very fond of.  It looks terrific and I’ll have more to say once I’ve finished it.  Then it was time to mosey on over to see a play.  Our very own Rob Stevens reviewed said play and didn’t much care for it.  I’m of pretty much the same mind.  The playwright is all over the place with this thing, and while it has an interesting opening twenty minutes, and a good end of act one bit, a lot of it just turns into cliché-land, especially in act two, when we not only get brutal prison tropes but also poetic magical tropes, too.  It’s just too much and it’s too long.  There are some nice performances, and the director does some good work, there’s a nice set and lighting, but in the end I really didn’t care for it much.

Then I came home and ate two count them two Popeye’s chicken breasts – I don’t know why, really, but eat them I did and I wish I hadn’t.  If wishes were horses then the horses would have stopped me from stopping at Popeye’s, but alas the horses were minding their own damn affairs and didn’t care that I really didn’t need to eat those kinds of calories that late.

Today, I have no plans, and have not heard from Sandy so I’m assuming our dinner will occur another time.  So, I will definitely do some writing, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, finish casting and choosing songs, since I’m now officially behind on doing so, I have a local dealer coming to pick up CDs, I’ll do some banking, and I may drive out to the Dale of Glen and set up the upcoming book signing for Murder at the Hollywood Division, since everything is now approved and on its way to the printers.

Tomorrow is like today, and then next week is all ALS stuff as we head into our final week prior to the show, and also three Sami work sessions, two of which will happen on Monday and Tuesday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, eat, hopefully pick up packages, bank, set up a signing, choose songs and finish casting and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite prison movies, books and plays?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall dream with a slight hurry and an edge.
