THE TIME SPACE CONTINUUM OF HHW

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’m wondering this: Why does this Friday night feel like Saturday night?  Yes, this is what I’m wondering.  It must have something to do with the time space continuum or Lent or Passover or Easter or the eternal mystery of how they get the pistachio nuts in those little shells.  I am sitting here like so much fish thinking our Kritzerland show is tomorrow and yet our Kritzerland stumble-through is tomorrow, which means she of the Evil Eye will be here bright and early, which means I’d better just write some notes rather than wonder and ponder the eternal question of why this Friday night feels like Saturday night.

Yesterday, which was Friday, was a day.  I only got about six hours of sleep thanks to some initial tossing and turning (TAT, are those initials).  I finally got up at nine, the helper came by at ten and we did our Costco run.  Costco was a zoo, probably because people were buying their Easter stuff.  Lines were long, aisles were crowded, but we always know exactly what we’re getting – so it was the giant mutant-sized thing of Airborne, some Mucinex-D, waters, Diet Cokes, some flowers to brighten up the home environment, a new pair of Levi jeans, another of these tops I like, and some pickles.  It was all very exciting.

Then we came home, put everything away and the helper went on her merry way and I went to have some food, namely a Cobb salad with 1000-Island dressing and a bagel with 1000-cream cheese.  After that, I came home, walked to the bank where I did some banking, then did some work on the computer, answered e-mails and then we had a little work session with Juliana Hansen.  Tom Griep and I came up with a spiffy arrangement of Over the Rainbow, which she’s going to sing as the closing number of the ALS show.  The song is short and we wanted it to really build, so I came up with some stuff to effect that and it seems pretty good to all of us.  Then Tom stayed and we did the few corrections on the latest chart he’s done for the Sami show, so he’ll send that one back all corrected and once that’s done, he’s only got one left, unless I write another couple of songs, which is certainly a possibility.  Doug Haverty came up with a great little poster for our little show – not ready to share it or the show’s title yet, but it’s really, really cute.  Sami hasn’t seen it, but I’ll probably let her take a peek at it after rehearsal today.  Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finished watching The Tales of Hoffman, a film of the opera, said film directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressberger.  It’s a pretty wild ride – I’m not really a fan of the opera itself, and the film isn’t top-tier for me in terms of their other films, but this new restoration is eye candy of the first order.  The design of the film is breathtaking and so outré it defies description and must be seen to be believed.  If I’d seen this film as a youngster it would have given me nightmares for sure.  In any case, it’s a pretty astonishing disc and I can heartily recommend it for that reason alone – this is what three-strip Technicolor looks like and the thing is pristine and sharp as a tack – I can pretty much guarantee it did not look as good as this even in the Technicolor prints.  It’s a magnificent job all around.

After that, I was restless in the City of Studio.  I wasn’t in a writing mood, so I just played on the computer, did a short jog, then finally went and got some chicken soup to bring home.  I ate that all up and that was that.

Today, which is Saturday, I’ll be up early, I’ll jog, I’ll eat something VERY light to tide me over until my regular meal, and then we have our stumble-through, after which some of us will undoubtedly get some food.   Then I’m in for the evening to rest and relax.

Tomorrow, I’ll jog, I’ll relax, then it’s sound check and show.  I will, of course, have a full report.  Then beginning on Monday it’s all going to be ALS stuff right up until the show.  Thankfully, I do think my structure works very well, and now I have to write a couple of patter things.  Then I have to figure out the traffic of the show – where people enter and exit, which mic they use, and all that stuff.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog of some sort, eat something light, have a stumble-through, eat a normal meal (but not too big), and then relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite songs of Irving Berlin and Harold Rome?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland on this Friday night that feels like a Saturday night and which now IS a Saturday night.
