THE LAST OF MAD MEN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, Mad Men has finished and like most episodes I’ve seen of the last three seasons it had its ups and downs, but more ups than downs.  I have been very bored with the Don road trip storyline, but it had to be there to get him where he eventually went during the series finale.  It’s been a fun ride, with some genuinely great episodes, along with some not so great episodes.  Some of the storylines were just plain irritating to me, but I’m sure others may have loved them.  I found Peggy to be the best-drawn and most interesting character on the series, even more than Don, as his stuff got repetitious from time to time.  In any case, Peggy’s wrap up seemed a bit abrupt but I was fine with it, less so with Roger, although it was okay.  I thought there was a little too much Joan in the finale, too.  And when Don got where he was going I just sat there and went, “Why do I have to watch this?”  But his phone calls with Sally, Betty and then Peggy made all that worthwhile, and then the final moment of the series, with the camera tracking in to Don’s face and what happens from there I thought was just about perfect.  Some things I’ve read have found the ending enigmatic as to what Don has done, but I don’t think there’s anything enigmatic about it.  So, overall I was happy with the finale and maybe at some point I’ll revisit the entire series on Blu-ray.

Prior to watching that, I had a restful and peaceful day, not necessarily in that order.  I do know I got between nine and ten hours of sleep, so that was really nice.  I did some work on the computer and then went and had a patty melt with no fries or onion rings.  I then came home, ate the piece of Parisian cake that was left and then finished the final bit of the commentary.  Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday I watched another four episodes of The Honeymooners, none of them classics, but all containing at least a few laugh out loud moments.  I’ll now take a break from watching for a couple of days, as watching them back to back isn’t necessarily the best way to view them.  And then it was Mad Men.

After Mad Men, I decided I’d been a lump for long enough and I went out for a jog – not hugely long – a mile-and-a-half – but it felt good and I’ll start doing that regularly because I really have to lose some weight.  Then I just relaxed and that was that.

Today, I shall catch up with a lot of stuff, then do some errands and whatnot, eat, jog, hopefully pick up packages and then do some work on the computer.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals as well as meals and meetings.  On Wednesday night I’m seeing a cabaret act, and I’m probably seeing a show on the weekend.  There will also be one Sami work session and one work session for the Kritzerland show.  All that stuff needs to be dealt with this week, because the week after we go into rehearsals for the Sami show, then do the show, then go directly into rehearsals for the Kritzerland show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, catch up, jog, do errands and whatnot, eat, hopefully pick up packages, and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite songs written by Paul Williams?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that I was mostly happy with the finale of Mad Men.
