WHERE’S THE ARM IN THAT?

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the shoulder is actually feeling better, while the arm is feeling worse.  It’s been bothersome all day, and now, as I write these here notes, I can barely lift it halfway up.  I’m still sure I must have pinched a nerve and that the shoulder part has gotten better and it’s traveled to the arm and that will get better soon – if it isn’t better by Friday, off to the chiropractor I go.  What is really nauseating about it is that it physically makes me nauseous, sick to my stomach, queasy.

Yesterday was a day in which my arm bugged me.  I slept over nine hours, so that was good, and frankly if I could have just stayed in bed all day I would have.  But, noooo, I had to get up and have a noon meeting with my set designer.  We went over his design for the Sami show – I liked it, but felt it was still too literal looking, so we made some adjustments (he does that right then on his computer) and then I was very happy with it.  I had a Caesar salad for luncheon.  Then I had to come straight home to meet the helper, who picked up some invoices and she was off to meet with a potential interim helper while she’s off for three months.

I answered e-mails, did some writing and work on the computer and then I sat on my couch like so much fish, trying to rest my arm.  I watched two more episodes of The Honeymooners, one really funny, the other not a classic.  I forgot to mention a motion picture I watched on the Flix of Net the other day – The Humbling, a film barely released last year starring Al Pacino.  In its own different way it’s kind of like Birdman in that the lead is doing a play, hallucinating and going through a lot of stuff.  The screenplay is by Buck Henry and another gentleman – I was happy to see that Buck is still at it – very talented.  Also, Charles Grodin was in it, along with Dianne Wiest.  And the lead gal was new to me and she’s really good – Greta Gerwig.  It’s not a great film (directed by Barry Levinson), but there are really good things in it, including a fall out of your chair funny scene at a veterinarian’s office.  I recommend it for its good parts – the film is based on a Philip Roth novel I’ve never heard of.

Then it was time to go to a club called Vibrato to see a singer that’s been recommended to me numerous times to do Kritzerland, Laura Dickenson.  She had a ten-piece band with her and did a lot of songs from her new CD, a tribute to Frank Sinatra.  From what I could hear of her, she’s very good, and certainly eclectic.  The problem was the sound in the club – she simply could not be heard over the band because the band was miked and they had her mic all the way up and it was just too much.  I’d like to hear her in a more intimate setting with a smaller band.  But she’s clearly very talented.  The club, owned by Herb Alpert, is very well appointed and the food is superb.  I decided to have three appetizers – a shrimp cocktail, lobster mac-and-cheese and buttered corn.  The shrimps were huge and I actually gave one away to Barry Pearl because it was just too much.  The lobster mac and cheese was amazing.  The waiter said it came in a small dish – well the dish was HUGE.  And the buttered corn was great, but it was way too much food and I, of course, could not stop eating it.  Attendance was on the low side, but the folks who were there were enthusiastic.

Then I came directly home, took two Tylenol and just tried to relax until David Letterman’s final show, which I’m looking forward to.

Today my plan is to stay home and let my arm rest.  I really don’t want to do anything at all, other than eat something light, hopefully pick up pacakges and just hopefully have my arm feel better.

Tomorrow, we have a work session for the Kritzerland show followed by a work session for the Sami show and then I’m going to see a musical entitled Violet.  The weekend will, I hope, be relaxing.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, stay home, rest, relax, eat, hopefully pick up packages, and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite Herb Alpert albums and tracks?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that tomorrow will bring a better arm, so please send lots of excellent vibes and xylophones for that.
