July 3, 2015:

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, today is the day of the stumble-through when tomorrow should be the day of the stumble-through, but tomorrow can’t be the day of the stumble-through, hence today is the day of the stumble-through, all thanks to the fourth of July falling on a Saturday, which is damn inconsiderate of the fourth of July, if you ask me.  As I said before, this Kritzerland show has almost done me in with its insane condensed rehearsal schedule.  I am praying we do not have a blood bath today, but I think it could go either way at this point.  Obviously no blood bath is preferable and would allow me to at least relax tomorrow.  I will not ever do this kind of rehearsal schedule again – we have a schedule that works and allows time for the performers to work here, then have a few days to work on their own so they can come back prepared for their second rehearsal and I can actually work with them.  In any case, I’m really thinking that big changes are coming for the Kritzerland shows – as of September we will have done a monthly show, each and every month without ever missing, for five YEARS.  I’m not sure I can do it anymore, frankly.  I do love doing them, it is fun for me and everyone loves the shows, but when we have a crazy one, like this one has been, I just want to walk away.  So, we’ll get through September and then I honestly don’t know how we’ll continue from there.  I may decide to go through the end of the year and stop, or I may decide that next year instead of 12 shows we’ll have 6.  Keeping this pace every month has been insane, but I don’t mind as long as everything works as it should.  But when it doesn’t, it just is too much work and craziness.  So, some kind of changes are coming – what they will be I cannot say for sure.

Yesterday was the comedy of errors day.  I got almost eight hours of sleep, got up, and did my morning stuff.  Someone was supposed to come here to pick something up in the morning and wires got crossed and they went elsewhere, so they then had to come here after going elsewhere.  Then I went and had a rather excellent Philly Cheesesteak sandwich and no fries or onion rings, then came home.  I actually haven’t been to the mail place since Saturday – very unusual for me.  Once home, I did a tiny bit of futzing and finessing of the commentary, had a couple of telephonic conversations and then I looked up and saw Gloria Loring coming to the front door.  Say what?  At Wednesday’s rehearsal I’d been told she was coming to the stumble-through – that was news to me, but I was happy to hear it.  Originally I’d been told she and our MD would have a brief rehearsal today, but that was a week ago and I always tell people to remind me, and then when I heard what I heard yesterday, I just gave it no more thought.  So, being completely confused, I told her it was Friday and she said no she couldn’t come on Friday.  Had she actually said that our MD was meeting her I would have just had her come in.  But she didn’t.  And more importantly if the MD had actually been on time and not fifteen minutes late then it would have all been fine.  But because I was really in the dark, I just had her leave and we decided we’d get together early at the sound check.  She left and fifteen minutes later the MD arrived.  I felt very bad for Ms. Loring and a little embarrassed to have been confused – but she was fine and completely understood that it was just miscommunication.  It really was a comedy of errors.   Then I did a short jog, then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled America, America, a film written and directed by Elia Kazan, based on his father’s history coming to America, America.  I’ve had this DVD for probably two years, had watched the first few minutes and never finished it.  I missed seeing the film when it came out, although I absolutely remember seeing the coming attractions for it several times – it opened here at the Beverly Theater in Beverly Hills.  So, I had no idea the thing was almost three hours long – I only made it the halfway point, but I’m really enjoying it.  I’ll have more to say when I finish it.

I made a couple of those low-cal, no-fat tiny flour tortilla with cheese things for my snack.

Today, I shall definitely jog before the stumble-through.  At two, two of our singers are coming to run stuff before we start, because their stuff was just so rough at the second rehearsal, a combo platter of them not being prepared enough and our MD not remembering the routines we’d worked out.  Then we do the stumble-through and then some of us are probably going to Casa Vega for a nice meal.

Tomorrow, I have a partay at neighbor Tony Slide and Bob Gitt’s house, and now I’ve been invited to another one at a film music collector’s house – I may try and stop by to that one, although I really don’t like driving on the fourth.

Sunday is our sound check and then we do our show.  I will, of course, have a full report.  Then we start on the August show and I have to start getting everything in motion for the Sami show – meeting with a set designer, getting a line producer to do all the nuts and bolts stuff, figuring out when we’re going to record the album – lots of stuff to plan out.  And, of course, I’m hoping to hear about a few of the titles being cleared and I’m hoping we can get two or three of those in the works immediately because I want to come out swinging at the end of July with four releases.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, have a stumble-through, have a fun meal, and then relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player?  I’ll start – CD, lots o’ stuff. DVD, America, America.  Blu-ray, The Bounty.  Your turn.  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that there will be no more comedy of errors and that we get through the stumble-through with no hiccups.
