August 8, 2015:

A SYSTEM CALLED RECIPROCITY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, thank heavens the Indiegogo campaign for Welcome to My World is done. It wasn’t anywhere near the fun of the Kritzerland campaign, and I went into the reasons for that in yesterday’s posts. Because we’d literally just finished the Kritzerland campaign, I had to step back from being involved with the Welcome to My World campaign, which Sami’s mom ran. I helped with the perks and the video and that was it. It went the way it went, I think Sami’s mom learned a lot about human nature and how some people don’t really understand the concept of reciprocity – Sami’s mom is a very generous person and very supportive, if you get my meaning about reciprocity – and we’re both just glad it’s done and over with. In fact, if I don’t hear the word Indiegogo for a very long time that will be fine by me. We raised some nice cash and we’ll be fine and I appreciate all you dear readers who bought the CD in advance or contributed whatever you did.

Yesterday was a wacky little day. I got just about eight hours of sleep. A local dealer came by at ten-thirty to pick up some CDs, we were surprised to find that Falling in Love had sold out, and then I answered e-mails and did some work on the computer. I can’t believe it but I still have one damn song to choose and I best choose it today. Then I went out and did some errands and whatnot, picked up one little package, and then I went to his new jernt called Mac-o-licious. It’s a hole-in-the-wall type jernt in a strip mall two blocks from where I once lived in the late 1970s. They have all manner of mac-and-cheese, plus some chicken and meat dishes, too. The Yelp reviews have been all over the place. I ordered the “classic Southern” and it’s actually very much like the mac-and-cheese my Aunt Lily made – hers was my favorite. This obviously wasn’t quite up to her homemade version, but it was very tasty after I put some salt on it. Everyone raved about their corn muffins – I found it dry and flavorless. Don’t know if I need to go back or not. A big minus is they don’t have Diet Coke – they have regular and they have a diet Dr. Brown’s black cherry, so why they have no damn Diet Coke is anyone’s guess. At two o’clock I had the jernt all to myself.

After that, I came home and spent the next several hours finishing my new song, which is earmarked for the new musical revue we’ll do next year. I think I’m happy with it – I may do some futzing with the lyric, but basically I think it works fine and I like the tune quite a bit. I sent it off to be turned into sheet music, and sent it to our very own Robert Yacko – we’ll probably premiere it in the September Kritzerland show. Then it was time to have a meeting with a potential lighting designer for our show.

We met at Jerry’s Deli – I had my usual turkey sandwich and no fries or onion rings, and she had some bacon and eggs. I liked her very much, she has quite a bit of experience, she seemed to “get” me, liked the idea of the show, and is on board. So, the creative team is now all set. All I lack is a line producer. I’ve asked two people to do it, and oddly both said they’d think on it and then never got back to me. Sometimes people just baffle me. So, I’ll continue that hunt and must find someone by early next week because I cannot and will not do any of that work. We actually begin rehearsals in ten days. After that, I came directly home.

It was too late to watch anything, so I read a little, we got a few last-minute contributions and that was that.

Today, she of the Evil Eye will arrive and I’ll go do a jog, then have some breakfast. Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, then come home and just relax and watch motion pictures.

Tomorrow will be more of the same, and then next week I have a lot of stuff to do in preparation for the start of rehearsals, including a production meeting with the set guy, the lighting guy, and our stage manager. I’ll figure out the show order and write the commentary, too, and then I have to have a work session with our musical director for the Kritzerland show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, eat, hopefully pick up packages, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What mac-and-cheese was the best you ever had? What are your favorite mac-and-cheese variations? And do you like Kraft Mac-and-Cheese and do you like the Jerry Herman musical Mac-and-Mabel?
