LINGER LONGER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, with the taste of Mexican food still lingering in the portals of my mouth. Do we have portals in our mouths? Isn’t an open mouth a portal of sorts? A food portal? But a singular portal – perhaps I shouldn’t have used the plural because that could be a misnomer. Then again, using the word misnomer could be a misnomer. In any case, the Mexican food I ate at four is still lingering somewhere in my mouth. I find that Mexican food tends to linger longer, for example, than cereal or toast. Linger longer – I love that. Linger longer might be the title of my next novel. I love this entire paragraph, actually, and I hope it will linger longer so I can lovingly luxuriate in its longeurs. That’s French, you know. And speaking of French, I had Mexican food for my meal o’ the day at a jernt called Mucho Mas, which means much more, which is also a song in The Fantasticks. I know you’re all dying to know what I had to eat and since we do want to linger longer in this here paragraph, I am happy to tell you. I had a combination plate – the combination was 12-18-42-14. I had two count them two beef tacos that were actually quite tasty. And I had one cheese enchilada, a little rice, and littler beans. The reason we ate at Much More (aka Mucho Mas) was because we’d just finished a two-hour tap rehearsal at Screenland Studios and Much More is just a half-block from there.

My pal Cheryl Baxter, a great tapper and wonderful choreographer (she did What If and the two big production numbers at our ALS benefit), came in and helped with our tap number. I wasn’t crazy about a lot of the stuff that Sami’s tap teacher had done, but within minutes Cheryl was switching it up and giving Sami new things that looked much better on her. In the first tap section she’s tapping alongside a standee on wheels of Fred Astaire, so I wanted an Eleanor Powell thing and Cheryl got that right away. In the second half she’s dancing with Gene Kelly, and she cleaned all that up and it’s much better now. Sami’s mom was filming it all on her phone so Sami will have that to work with, plus they’re going to work for two hours today, too.

Prior to that, I’d gotten about six hours of sleep, then the helper came by to get some invoices. After that, I did some more work on my new song, I had a long telephonic call about our lighting designer, who may be dropping out, although I sincerely hope not as the reasons for it would be just too silly for words. We’ll probably know today. Then I headed over to Screenland and just had fun watching Sami and Cheryl work.

After that, we ate, and then I stopped at the mail place and picked up a couple of packages, then came home. I caught up on e-mails and such, then around seven-thirty did my jog. It was really too late to start a motion picture, so instead I played some new CDs that have been sitting here. A wonderful Perry Como album called Look to Your Heart, a later RCA album, the CD version has lots of bonus tracks. When I was a wee bairn, Mr. Como was my favorite. I loved his laid-back style and relaxed manner – Guy Haines owes a lot to Mr. Como, albeit in lower keys. After that, I listened to a not very well known Paul Williams effort called A Little On the Windy Side – also with several bonus tracks. It’s certainly not my favorite Paul Williams album, but I enjoyed mostly all of it. Then I continued my re-reading of William Goldman’s The Season, in honor of Mr. Goldman’s recent birthday.

Today, I think I’ll mostly relax. I may go over and see the last fifteen minutes of the Sami rehearsal just to see how it’s going, and I’ll eat, hopefully pick up some packages, and then watch some motion pictures.

Tomorrow I have a ten o’clock meeting with our stage manager and our costume designer, and then I’ll just relax until the evening meeting with our costume designer and a guy who’s going to help with the two quick-change outfits. Then Monday we begin our rehearsals, which I’m very much looking forward to.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, maybe seen the end of a rehearsal, eat, hopefully pick up packages, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Who were and are your favorite classic male crooners? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, not able to linger longer due to having to post these here notes.
