August 1, 2015:

THE ARRIVAL OF AUGUST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, may I just point out the obvious? May I just point out that it is August? There, I’ve pointed it out for those who aren’t paying attention. I cannot believe it’s August and yet I must, for it is August. And may I also say that it is my fervent hope and prayer that August will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.

For the fourth night in a row I woke up ninety minutes after falling asleep, and since I didn’t fall asleep until two-thirty you can imagine just how irritating that was. So, I got up and buckled down, Winsocki and spent an hour with my new What If parody, which is very complicated – so with the sheet music open, the cast album track, and my parody lyrics, I made sure everything matched up perfectly, made the cuts that were made for the cast album, and figured out who will be singing what. It was daunting but it’s done now and correct and it’s already off to the singers involved in it, as they will need all the time they can get with this thing. I went back to bed around five-thirty. It never felt like I fell asleep, but I’m sure I did and I’m sure I got about five hours of sleep. I’m just trying to stay healthy for Sunday’s show and losing this much sleep in a week is not helping that cause. So, I’ve been popping lots of Sambucol and Airborne and hopefully those will keep me out of harm’s way. Of course, I’m sure some of it is psychological as I’m always this way if there’s the possibility of having to fill in for Guy Haines.

Once up, I chose a few more songs for the September anniversary show, locked in Alby Potts to play the show, and then met a friend I hadn’t seen, shockingly, for two years. We had fun catching up and spent ninety minutes doing so. I had a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and no fries or onion rings. Then I picked up a couple of packages, came home, walked to the bank where I did some banking, which is what I like to do when I go to the bank, then came home. I then worked on the lyric for this new song I’m writing – I think it’s coming out well and I quite like the music. I had a few telephonic calls, did a jog, and then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, just for grins, I watched the first forty-five minutes of The Island of Dr. Moreau. I was so fascinated by the Lost Souls documentary that I just had to see the film. The first ten minutes is fine and you might actually think it’s going to be a decent film. John Frankenheimer is certainly an always-interesting director and visually it’s slick, thanks to Mr. Frankenheimer’s good eye and the photography of William Fraker. After twenty minutes you realize that this thing has gone downhill fast, mostly thanks to Val Kilmer arriving. One has no idea what kind of character he’s playing – I don’t think he did. And then, dear Lord, and then – Mr. Brando shows up, in white powder makeup, lipstick, and what looks like a chiffon outfit. He has fake teeth rather akin to something Jerry Lewis would do, a curious English accent that, coupled with the fake teeth, make him sound like a cartoon character. The Stan Winston creature stuff is very well done and it’s got a noisy score by Gary Chang. I’ll tough it out to the end, but not in one sitting.

After that, I did some work on the computer and that was that.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after a good night’s beauty sleep. Once up, I will jog, hopefully pick up packages, and then we have our stumble-through and hopefully all this throat guck, which is a direct result of the lack of sleep, will have gone with the wind. After the stumble-through I’m sure we’ll run a few things, and then I’ll go eat something light but amusing – there’s a new jernt I read about, which is right up my alley – it’s called Mac-o-licious, and it’s a mac-and-cheese jernt only five minutes from here. I had no idea of its existence and I simply must try it. I’m staying in after that, relaxing, and keeping my trap shut.

Tomorrow, I’ll hopefully get another good night’s beauty sleep, I’ll jog, and then we have our sound check and show. Next week is a lot of meetings and meals, getting singers their sheet music, doing the final song choices, figuring out the show order, and getting the commentary done early, because in two weeks we begin rehearsals for Welcome to My World.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, have a stumble-through, eat, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What’s the best mac-and-cheese you’ve ever had, whether homemade or restaurant made? Easy one for me – my Aunt Lily’s – she made the best mac-and-cheese ever – I used to have the recipe for it but who knows what happened to it. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, and it is my fervent hope and prayer that August will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
