NOTES WITH A SIDE OF HEADACHE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have a rather splitting headache as I begin these here notes. I don’t really know what exactly the headache is splitting, but it is splitting my head certainly. In any case, first things first because to do second things first would be unseemly.

Yesterday’s matinee was quite a good performance and we had about a third of a house and they were a really good audience. We got lots o’ nice comments after the show. My favorites are the parents who come to me and thank me for creating a character who has actual values and doesn’t succumb to peer pressure or the need to be popular. Some of those values are actually Sami’s values, too, which is nice, but all of them were certainly my values when I was a young teen. But of course we also get parents and kids who are the opposite and so I don’t think they enjoy the show very much, if you get my drift. I just think it’s about damn time we have positive role models rather than “people” like that Miley woman and others of her ilk. Sami did great again and it’s always fun to watch it when we have a crowd that’s into the show. We even had a couple of return visitors.

After the matinee, a bunch of us went to the Coral Café. We had nachos deluxe for the table, and then I had some chilaquiles, as my original BLTA wrap was not doable, since they were out of the A. I hate when that happens. But the chilaquiles, whatever the HELL they are, was good.

Prior to all that, I’d gotten almost eight hours of sleep, stayed in bed for a while, then got up and got ready for the matinee. Once home from the meal, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on You Tube (watched it on my TV – a first) entitled Garbo Talks. I’d never seen it. Truth be told, it’s not very good – it’s too choppy and comprised of one-page scenes that go nowhere until the handful of more meaty scenes. I love Sidney Lumet, but this is not one of his greats. Anne Bancroft is as terrific as always, and her long monologue she speaks to Garbo is wonderfully acted. Carrie Fisher is wasted, Catherine Hicks is cute as a button and fun, but the most affecting performance in the film is from Ron Silver – an actor I wasn’t all that fond of, but he’s just really good in this one. There are several fun cameo, including funny turns from Dorothy Loudon and especially Hermione Gingold, and Howard Da Silve, Adolph Green and a few others of that ilk also make appearances. Garbo is played by Betty Comden, although we never see her face. The lovely music is by none other than Cy Coleman (he also makes an appearance). It’s a pleasant film that never quite gets where it wants to get.

After that, the headache began to come on, so I just relaxed and listened to music and took two Tylenol, and I also had a telephonic conversation.

Today, I have to finish choosing songs. We’re now fully cast save for a guest star. Oh, and we need a musical director – all our folks seem to be busy. Our master should be winging its way to the pressing plant. I’ll eat, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, but mostly I’ll be finishing the song choices.

Tomorrow I have to catch up on a lot of stuff, then Sami and I are doing The Broadway Radio Show with Donald Feltham in the early evening hours. The rest of the week is meetings and meals and a pick-up rehearsal and next weekend’s performances.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora and the Monkey, for today is the birthday of our beloved dear reader Laura.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com cheer to our beloved dear reader Laura.  On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR BELOVED DEAR READER LAURA!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I just do the things I do, I must, for example, finish choosing songs, find a musical director and guest star, eat, hopefully pick up packages and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite performances of Miss Anne Bancroft? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that the notes with a side of headache will disappear soon.
