TAKING THE BULL BY THE HORNS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is late and I must write these here notes in a hurry because to not do so would be unseemly and someone would horsewhip me with an actual horse. I was on an actual horse two or three times. I did not care for it one or even two whits. The horse made me very nervous and I’m sure I made the horse very nervous. I do not believe I’ve been anywhere near a horse in, oh, say sixty years, which is amazing since I’m only forty-two. In any case, it is time to take the bull by the horns and write these here notes. Oops, I forgot we’re living in 2015 – can’t take the bull by the horns anymore or it will be all over Facebook and there will be ever so much righteous indignation and moral outrage. Well, you know what, Facebook – I’m taking the damn bull by the horns and it is just tough beans, I’m afraid.

Yesterday was a day in which I labored mightily to do the simplest of tasks, thanks to various and sundried sites that simply do not make it easy to do the simplest of tasks. I got about eight hours of sleep, got up, and the helper arrived with the Welcome to My World CDs. I pulled aside ten copies to have signed, as several of you dear readers requested signed copies and we are always attentive to the wants and desires of dear readers. Then began the ordeal of the listings. I began with CD Baby. One has to do a lot of stuff methodically in listing there. Track titles, descriptions, uploading WAV files, setting prices, ticking off various and sundried options – the whole thing took over an hour. Then I had to list the Corey Fogelmanis single, which is digital only. That didn’t take as long. Once I had those done, I actually called CD Baby and they confirmed everything was fine.

I then went and had a salad with red wine vinegar and a droplet or two of oil, along with a bagel. Then I came back home and began listing the CD on Amazon. For whatever reason, it was very difficult, but I finally got it listed. But I forgot to upload the cover – that should have been an easy after the fact fix, but nooooo – nothing on Amazon is easy. So, for some reason the cover of Hangover Square was being shown. The question is how – I’ve never uploaded that cover to Amazon, I don’t sell it on Amazon (nor any limited edition release) – I kept trying to change it – I’d upload the correct image, save it, and it wouldn’t show up and wasn’t there when I went back to the page I’d just saved. I did this about eight times, then I just nuked the entire listing and began again. At that point, I just kept getting error messages and nothing would work, so I wrote them an e-mail and they said someone will call me. I presume that call with come on the twelfth – of never. I wasted over two hours doing that foolishness. Then I did some work at the piano, and then it was time to mosey on over to the theater for our evening performance.

I arrived at seven, gave Sami her very own CD and she seemed really thrilled by it. I knew a few people in the audience and spoke to them before the show. There was a lot of family, and they can sometimes be a weird audience because, I think, it may be confusing to them that Sami is actually playing a character and not herself. I also think when they have young teens with them that certain things make them uncomfortable – why is anyone’s guess, since they’re things that are taught in school to twelve-year-olds. You can’t have it all ways from Sunday folks – if they can teach it we can talk about it. There were nice laughs throughout but I felt the whole show was just a little off and I think Sami felt the same way. The good news about Sami is is she’s as much a perfectionist as I am and she’s really aware when something isn’t exactly right. But I think the audience quite enjoyed it and we even sold some CDs after the show. I’d say we had about half a house, so that’s up from last week.

After the show, I spoke with friends Penny Peyser, Joshua Finkel, and the wonderful actress, Barbara Brownell. I ended up going to the Coral Café with Barbara and her friend, and Doug Haverty came over and met us. I had a tiny cup of clam chowder and eggs benedict, which were the best they’ve ever been there. I had no idea that Barbara was in the original cast of Woody Allen’s Play it Again, Sam, which means that I saw her in the show in 1969. Then I stopped and put gas in the motor car and then came home.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after a good night’s beauty sleep. I’ll eat something very light, just a sandwich or something, I’ll jog, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, I’ll do a show order and begin writing commentary and then I’ll attend the evening performance of our show. Hoping for a nice turnout.

Tomorrow we have a matinee and I will have a full report on it. I’m sure we’ll sup after – perhaps even at the Smoke House. Next week is writing the commentary, meetings and meals, and doing some other writing.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, eat something light, do a show order and begin writing a commentary, attend a performance and then perhaps go out after. Today’s topic of discussion: What do you think of all the righteous indignation and hourly moral outrage on Facebook? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall happily take the damn bull by the horns.
