ACCORDING TO HOYLE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, first things first: Please send really excellent vibes and xylophones for part two of the miracle, which could happen this morning if all goes according to Hoyle and we do like when all goes according to Hoyle, do you hear me Hoyle? I’m talkin’ to you, Hoyle. In other news, can someone please explain to me how we’re almost at the end of October? Can someone just please explain THAT to me? This month has flown by, like a gazelle acting out. Speaking of acting out, who made up that stupid phrase for misbehaving. I hate all these new-fangled phrases for everything, don’t you? Oh, am I acting out? Ooh, I hope I’m not acting out. I wonder how Hoyle feels about acting out? And what about acting in? Well, I should probably write some notes right about now, shouldn’t I? I should, according to Hoyle, who knows from these things.

Yesterday was day in which I did not act out. I had a little under eight hours of sleep, had a nice telephonic conversation with our very own Miss Sandy Bainum, who’s currently playing Mame in Mame, which is better than playing Mame in Fiddler on the Roof. After that, I answered e-mails, wrote e-mails, and then I had to mosey on over to the editor’s house to watch the Welcome to My World video. He did a great job with it, and I only had a few nitpicky things to fix, which we did, and he’s now finalizing it and I’ll have it today on the hard drive. Then I’ll put together a nice package for the licensing people and send it to them via Dropbox or Hightail.

After that it was already three-thirty and I hadn’t eaten a thing, so I went to Jerry’s Deli and had a Chinese chicken salad, which was very good, although smaller this time. Then I came home and did some work on the computer, then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finished watching a motion picture on the Flix of Net entitled Shining Through, starring Michael Douglas, Melanie Griffith, and Liam Neeson, from the novel by Susan Isaacs, and written and directed by David Seltzer. It starts out okay, with Griffith as our plucky, smart heroine. It’s a World War II thing, and the minute she’s deposited in Germany to spy she turns into a moron. Sorry, Mr. Seltzer, that’s very bad writing. So, everything from about the forty-minute mark on is terrible and just gets worse and worse. From what I’ve read, Mr. Seltzer thinks he’s lots better than the novelist, so the plot of the film bears little resemblance to the book. Thus: Hollywood. The one thing that shines through on Shining Through is the nice score by Michael Kamen.

After that, I did some more work on the computer, and then I began watching the recommended Deli Man, which, happily, is available on Amazon streaming to watch for free (if you have Prime). They’ve changed their viewing software to something called Silverlight, and that was a bit challenging to download (it’s free) but I finally got it done and so far I’m just enjoying the HELL out of Deli Man, although the downside is I really want to go to Nate ‘n’ Al’s or Langer’s NOW.

Today, I have to be home for most of the day – so I’m not sure when exactly I’ll get a bite to eat – I may have to just bring something home, maybe a turkey sandwich from Jerry’s Deli. I could go there very early and just get a loaf of rye bread and a quarter pound of turkey and make my own damn sandwich. We’ll see. I also have to pick up a package, but I can probably do that at the end of the day. Then I have to do this event at the Burbank Barnes & Noble in Burbank at Barnes & Noble, which is in Burbank. That’s probably a two-hour thing, and I’ll sign whatever I sell, and then apparently there’s a little after-party thing next door at Chevy’s. Not sure I’ll partake of that.

Tomorrow, I can relax a bit, and then I’m going with the Staitman clan to Newport or some far off place to the Dal-Rae steakhouse to celebrate Jenna Lee Rosen’s seventeenth birthday. I’ve been working with her since she was twelve. Saturday is Halloween, so I’ll be here giving out lots of candy, and then Sunday I’m seeing a matinee of a play, a play matinee, and then having some food after.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be home for most of the day, eat, and then do an event. Todays’ topic of discussion: What are your favorite films of Melanie Griffith and Michael Douglas? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I hope and pray I wake up to part two of the miracle if all goes according to Hoyle.
