THE DOUBLE WHAMMY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is late and I must write these here notes in a hurry, not only because our stumble-through is early but I also believe she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon. That is what they call a double whammy. Not a single whammy mind you, but a double whammy. Have you ever had a double whammy? Did you have it in Miami? There’s nothing quite like a Miami whammy especially when it comes from someone named Sammy. What the HELL am I talking about? Oh, and keep sending excellent vibes and xylophones for no sickness and a strong, healthy orotund voice.

Yesterday was the day I got coifed by Teddy. I was not wearing a teddy when I got coifed by Teddy, nor was I listening to Helen Reddy when I got coifed by Teddy. He did his usual fine coifing. I’d slept about seven hours with some mighty peculiar dreams. Oh, and here’s the weird part – once I turned onto Melrose the traffic was grotesque. I mean completely backed up for almost a mile. We crawled along and I finally got off at Melrose Place and jogged over to La Cienega. And La Cienega was grotesque, both north and south. I have driven this route for YEARS at that time of day and there’s never traffic. It was completely random and irritating. And when I left I could see La Cienega was still a mess so I took some side streets up to Santa Monica Blvd. and that was fine and Santa Monica Blvd. was a breeze.

Then I went and had a cup of chicken soup and some chicken tenders – all good. Then I came home and had to relax. I have literally not been talking at all save for the LACC thing the day before and that continued for most of yesterday. I sat on my couch like so much fish and turned on the Flix of Net and put on some Jackie Chan Police Story movie and immediately fell asleep for almost the entirety of the movie. I have no idea if it was a good Jackie Chan movie or not. Then I got ready to go to Barry Pearl’s.

The freeway wasn’t bad at all and I got there in short order. Then I followed Barry to the theater and that took only twenty minutes, which is pretty fast. We parked our cars and then walked to the theater. We said hello to bunches of people we know, and I met the critic who did the Broadway World review of Welcome to My World, and I told him how much I’d enjoyed his writing and most of all his understanding of the show. Then we went into the theater to see Damn Yankees.

Three hours later it was over. Part of that time was the pre-show ten-minute speech and a quick raffle drawing before act two, so the show really ran about two hours and forty minutes. That’s a bit too long for a show like Damn Yankees, but had Jerry Lewis been in it it would have been ten minutes longer. When I saw Jerry do the show it was his first night on and he was great – no fooling around and really playing the part. He did a tiny bit of shtick in Those Were the Good Old Days, the stuff with the canes, but it was only about a minute long and great. By the end of the Broadway run and the tour that four-minute number had grown to almost twelve minutes. Anyway, we had fun seeing it – I knew several in the cast, including John Sloman as Applegate (he’s done several Kritzerland shows and stars in one of the Outside the Box episodes) and young Joe was Travis Leland, who’s done two Kritzerland shows. After, we said hey to folks, I saw John and Travis, and then I left to go home, while Barry went on to the party.

I picked up a small package of cashews for my little late-night snack and ate them all up whilst answering a few e-mails.

Today, I’ll be up earlier than I’d like, I’ll do some banking, I have to buy some waters thanks to no Costco run, and then we have our stumble-through at noon. We should be done with that by one-thirty and then some of us will go have a bite to eat. Then I’m coming home and not doing anything but relaxing.

Tomorrow, I’ll hopefully get a good night’s beauty sleep, and then I relax until it’s sound check and then we do our show. I will, of course, have a complete report for you. Next week is meetings and meals, a day off on Monday, writing, and other things.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day I must do the things I do, I must, for example, bank, buy waters, have a stumble-through, eat, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite books, movies or plays about sports? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I will hopefully sleep without the aid of NyQuil, which I do not wish to take, and that I only have one doubly whammy from Sammy in Miami.
