THE PANCAKES ARE BACK IN TOWN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we played our second to last show to a very small audience of fifteen. I cannot tell you how irritating that was for me, but Sami was a champ and just went out there and played the damn show for all it was worth. And they were a good fifteen. But fifteen on a Saturday night? Not for me, baby. I was ready to cancel earlier today, but I was assured we had twenty-five. But of course there were ten no-shows so I have no idea if they were firm or not. Two of the no-shows had PAID for their tickets. I don’t get THAT at all. I have so many LA friends, both in theater and not, including so many that I’ve used in the Kritzerland shows over and over and over again – you’d just think they’d come out to see the show, but nooooo. Some had legit excuses so I get that. But many didn’t, other than, for whatever reasons, they just didn’t feel like seeing it. I don’t know what kind of show they thought it was and whether they were put off that it was one fourteen-year-old doing a solo show – but who gives a flying Wallenda if it’s an entertaining show. Our audiences, small though they’ve occasionally been, have loved it, loved Sami, and told their friends and some have even had multiple repeat visits. That part of this process, the no-shows from people I know, has been the only real negative. But, the good news is, when they need a favor from me or need me to see their show, I’ll just be too busy or too lazy to care. Tit for tat, baby, tit for tat, or, for that or any other matter, tat for tit.

In attendance were our very own Amy and Mark – I think this was their third time. Otherwise, the only other person I really knew was Shelly Markham. He’d seen the workshop and enjoyed it, but had some suggestions about making musical transitions smoother, which I would have ended up doing anyway. He professed to love the show, he thought Sami was a whole different person from the workshop (and indeed she is), thought the set and lighting were great, loved the interplay between Sami and Alby Potts, and thought I’d pulled the show together really well – fixing dead spots and awkward stuff from the workshop, rearranging certain things, cutting, adding – it was nice to hear.

After the show, Shelly and I went out for a bite. We first tried Paty’s Coffee Shop – they were closed. Bob’s Big Boy a block away had a wait time of an HOUR. So, we ended up going to Du-Par’s. I hadn’t been in quite some time and they’ve really spruced up the place with a nice makeover. All new booths and everything looks spiffy and clean. So, even though I haven’t liked the pancakes in ages, I decided to have a short stack and some chicken strips. Shelly had their famous Welsh Rarebit. The chicken strips were pretty tasty but came with french fries, which I didn’t know or I would have told them to bring cole slaw or something else. Still, I gave Shelly one of the five chicken strips along with most of the fries – I only had a handful. But, and it’s a big BUTT – the pancakes are back! They were as good as they’ve ever been, which is the best. All the flavor I love, the melted butter, the great maple syrup (they also have boysenberry), perfectly cooked and I was in pancake heaven. I only ate half, and then Shelly had some. We had fun catching up.

Prior to all that, I only got about six hours of sleep, then she of the Evil Eye arrived. I had a bout of nausea, so I went and had two poached eggs on white toast with some white rice and half a ginger ale. It really did the trick and I felt completely better after that. Then I came home, did some work on the computer, then sat on my couch like so much fish.

I went to the Flix of Net and chose a movie I knew would instantly put me to sleep – High Society. And it did – I slept for forty-five minutes. I had some telephonic calls, then it was time to get ready and mosey on over to the theater.

Today, I’ll relax until it’s time to mosey on over to the theater, at which point I’ll mosey on over to the theater. We have a pretty full house already and I suspect more reservations will come in the morning. We’ll do our final performance, and then the key players will go to Genghis Cohen for our little cast partay.

This coming week is meetings and meals, getting everything prepped for the Kritzerland show, and catching up on a lot of stuff – a very busy week for sure.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, attend our closing performance, have a cast partay at Genghis Cohen, and then relax and be emotional. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, ecstatic that the pancakes are back in town.
