DOING TUESDAY THINGS ON A TUESDAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I just had one of those moments trying to figure out if it was Tuesday or Wednesday. I was thinking it was Wednesday and then I waffled and thought, no, it’s Tuesday. I not only waffled, I pancaked, too. So, I had to check and it is indeed Tuesday, for those who, like me, thought it was Wednesday. Can you imagine the chaos that would have ensued if I’d kept thinking it was Wednesday? I would have done Wednesday stuff instead of Tuesday stuff, and then the Tuesday stuff would just be sitting there like so much fish and then when Wednesday finally happens all the Wednesday stuff is done and the Tuesday stuff would need to get done and this is giving me a very big headache even thinking about it. So, thankfully I have been informed by a thing called a calendar that it is, in fact, Tuesday.

Yesterday, which would have been Tuesday if today was Wednesday, was actually Monday and a reasonably okay day. The helper cancelled our meeting due to being on vocal rest. But thankfully the interim helper was back a day earlier and so everything that needed to get done yesterday actually got done. She’s a very good egg and I would keep her on permanently, but she’s leaving town for three weeks starting in late November, so that doesn’t work. I do have a replacement coming in to meet with the helper on Wednesday morning, and we will train her. Then she can handle those three weeks, we’ll see how she does, and then I may just split the duties between them or just let the interim helper take over full time. The one thing we know is the helper is done.

That stuff took up most of the morning and then I went and had a Chinese chicken salad and a bagel, then picked up no packages, then came home. I did some work on the computer, some work at the piano, read the handful of nice comments about the videos, which I’ll be pulling off You Tube later today for reasons that are only interesting to me, and then we had us a real LA rain – about forty seconds. Then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

First I watched the new interviews on the Mulholland Drive Blu and Ray, and they were all very interesting and enjoyable. Then I watched a motion picture entitled Devil in a Blue Dress. I saw it when it came out and really enjoyed it, but have never seen it since. Well, it’s still excellent and enjoyable, and actually twenty years later it looks like a minor classic. Interestingly, the film did not do well at all. I have no idea why that would be – it’s beautifully acted and directed, well written (based on the novel by Walter Mosley), has an excellent score by Elmer Bernstein (along with great songs of the period) and great production design, really capturing that neck of the woods in postwar Los Angeles. Denzel Washington was a great choice for the lead, and Don Cheadle almost walks away from the film. The transfer is fantastic and it’s another Twilight Time slam-dunk. I recommend it highly rather than lowly.

After that, I watched a couple of things on You Tube – two recent 20/20 segments – one about Leah Rimini and her exit from a certain religion, and the other about a fatal car accident that left four dead and many injured, caused by a sixteen-year-old idiot whose alcohol level was through the roof. And what did he get for his crime? Nothing – some community service, a ten-year parole, and some rehab. The kid is the son of millionaires, parents from hell who never parented and simply gave this idiot everything he wanted, never said no, never punished, and basically gave him his own huge house with pool to live in at sixteen. The judge who gave that ridiculous verdict retired. The parents finally settled with every one of the families. One family held out so that the world could see the deposition tapes – after those were made public, and just before the civil trial was to happen, the rich parents settled with that family, too, thereby avoiding more humiliation.

Today, I shall do some Tuesday things. I shall do my morning stuff, I’ll eat, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, I’ll get singers music (still looking for our elusive musical director), and stuff like that.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, training a new helper, doing a Costco run (haven’t been in four damn months), try to get approval on our next release, prepping the release that will follow that one, seeing an opening night, and stuff like that.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do Tuesday things, eat, hopefully pick up packages, get singers music, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite private eye movies and TV shows? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be doing Tuesday things on a Tuesday rather than a Wednesday.
