December 2, 2015:

THE NOT SO PRIME AMAZON PRIME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle with a hangnail. I’m quite tired as I write these here notes, because I had one of those itchy ankles nights and could not fall asleep until after four, despite the damn NyQuil. And I had socks on, too. So, once asleep I slept fitfully – kept waking up, falling asleep, waking up. I just stayed in bed until eleven-thirty and figure I got maybe six hours of sleep.

Once up, I did a bit of writing, but I wasn’t feeling so hot, so I just tried to relax. At some point I went and picked up packages, but Amazon is being so retarded of late that things that aren’t showing as delivered ARE delivered, and things that should be delivered aren’t and they keep giving new dates, even though they’re supposedly in transit and I’m on Amazon Prime and things aren’t showing up in the two-day window. It looks like I may have to call them again tomorrow because two items should have already been here. It’s quite annoying. After that, I came right home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

I watched another episode of The Man in the High Castle, but it’s just so dark (photography-wise) and the atmosphere is just so oppressive and gloomy, I just don’t know how many more episodes I’ll make it through.

Then we had our short rehearsal. It was Kerry O’Malley’s second rehearsal, as she can’t be here on Thursday, and then we had Adrienne Visnic, who sounds really great on all three of her numbers – my song, This Christmas, her big number from Inside Out, I Don’t Say Anything, and finally What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve, this year for the first time with the verse, which is nice.

After that, I went and had chicken soup and a Chinese chicken salad, kind of a Jew/Asian put-together – I even had a bagel with the salad, just because I was feeling the Jew/Asian love. Then I came home, feeling a bit better after food. One of the packages I got yesterday was an early birthday treat from our very own FJL and his ever-lovin’ Skip – two boxes of Godiva truffles. I will admit that I’ve already eaten four and boy were they yummilicious. Then I sat on my couch again like so much fish.

Last night I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Man from UNCLE. Ordinarily I would never have watched it because I knew it would be terrible, and it was a bit of a bomb in theaters. But my new favorite actress, Alicia Vikander was in it and that’s why I watched it. I was not quite prepared for how bad it actually is – it’s REALLY bad. It’s one of those wink-wink, smarmy, aren’t we clever and precious movies that are like fingernails on a blackboard. The two leading men are not interesting at all, it really has nothing to do with the TV series, since the story takes place prior to UNCLE being formed, the plot is stupid, and they just spend way too much time thinking they’re so hip and with it and that the audience is just going to eat it up. Nope. Didn’t eat it up. Hated just about every single minute. Except, that is, for Ms. Vikander, who in this film resembles Francoise Dorleac – she’s fun, funny, beautiful and wears the period clothes very well. In fact, that’s the only thing that works – the clothes and some of the sets. Rather than scoring it like the TV show, the director, of whom I am no fan whatsoever, clearly temped the film with all his favorite 60s Italian film music, mostly Ennio Morricone. In fact, the end credits reveal that they actually bought tracks by Morricone and Stelvio Cipriani – but the actual composer is basically just aping Morricone the entire time – it’s embarrassing at times. Rather than being like the TV show, this plays more like Danger: Diabolik or Modesty Blaise, although those films are 100 times more entertaining and fun. The transfer’s fine as is the sound.

After that, I thought about watching the DGA screener that had arrived, something called Legend, about the infamous Krays – I wonder how many films have been made about the Krays, because I think it’s more than a few. This one, from what I’ve read, seems like it’s going to be hyper-violent, so I know that part of it will be off-putting to me. I really am tired of the overt violence in most films – it’s just too much already. We get it. I’m sure I’ll watch it. Then I just relaxed, took a shower, and that was that.

Today, the new interim helper will be here at ten, then, depending on how I’m feeling, I’ll either stay up or go back to sleep. I think I’m winning the sick fight, so keep sending those excellent vibes and xylophones for that and part three of the miracle, which I was pretty much told won’t happen until at least Friday. But, maybe a miracle will happen and it will happen sooner than that by a day. Then I’ll eat something, write, supposedly two screeners will arrive, hopefully the errant and truant packages will arrive, and then I’ll just relax and keep getting better.

Tomorrow is our second Kritzerland rehearsal, so that will be fun. Not sure what’s happening on Friday, Saturday is a holiday party, and Sunday we have our stumble-through and there may be an early birthday celebration dinner for ME afterwards.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, eat, hopefully pick up packages, finesse my commentary, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping Amazon will once again be Prime.
