THE TELEPHONE HOUR

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I do believe I spent half of yesterday on the telephonic device. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, do believe I spent half of yesterday on the telephonic device. It was like the all-day all-night version of The Telephone Hour. The day certainly did not begin that way. It began with me getting up after seven-and-a-half hours of sleep. Once up, I was up. Being up I looked at my e-mails and even answered a few. Once that task was done, I did some work on the computer, did some organizing with the helper, and she shipped out a bunch of CDs. Then I had the first telephonic call with our very own elmore. Then Kay Cole and John Boswell arrived and we spent ninety minutes playing through music – this is for a CD we’re going to do and it’s about damn time. Then I found out that the musical director who thought he could do the LA show couldn’t, so that began the long telephonic day.

But before that actually began, I actually went and had a cup of soup, an omelet, and a bagel. Then I came home. I put the word out on Facebook that I was looking for a musical director and got quite a good response. I also saw the first attempt at a Doug Haverty cover for the book. I thought the idea of it seemed to really say what the book was, but I didn’t like certain aspects of it. I showed it to Muse Margaret and she felt as I did so I asked for a few alternate versions addressing what we felt the issues were. Meanwhile, I had long telephonic conversations with about five musical directors. I’ve kind of narrowed it down to two and will meet with them next week, but I really have to get this locked down. That really did take up three or four hours.

I also had a nice telephonic call with Barry Pearl, and we’ve decided not to attend the dress rehearsal, because one would literally be there for seven hours and that’s just too long. But I got to hear the technical side of things, which is fascinating. I had an ice cream cone (a drumstick, in fact), then saw three revised covers – they were closer, but I asked for a few more adjustments and those came just a little while ago and I sent them to Grant and Muse Margaret. If we go with one particular one then that will need one tiny adjustment, but I like the feel of them and think it says what the book is or at least gives a feel of what the book is. Grant was willing to do more work on his initial idea, and I may let him because that could always be on the back cover with the blurbs.

Today, I’ll try to finish casting the Kritzerland show so I can make final song choices – haven’t heard back from two of the men I approached (which always seems to be the way), but I’ll give them one more day before moving on. I’ll eat, hopefully pick up packages, hopefully dodge bullets and hopefully have no merde hitting the merde, but this weekend we need some double strength miracles so send your most excellent vibes and xylophones, please. I’m sure at some point I’ll watch something, but I’m also hoping we can finalize the book cover so I can finally share it with you all.

Tomorrow I have stuff to do, and I may have some evening thing to go to if someone reminds me what it is. Sunday is more of the same, and then next week is very busy, as I think I’ll be entering the final fixes and getting the book to Grant for designing. That part usually goes pretty fast and then I have to do my final proofing and off it will go to the publisher.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, try to finish casting, make final song choices, gather music, find a musical director for the Kritzerland show, hopefully will have to deal with nothing horrible, and then I’ll eat, hopefully pick up packages, do some banking, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, haven’t a clew. Blu and Ray, a Japanese animated film called Harlock from Twilight Time. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall rest my weary ear from The Telephone Hour.
