THE FINAL TWO BLURBS AND L.A. A GO GO

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, first off let’s get to the two new blurbs for the back of the book. I already posted blurb one from Mr. Richard M. Sherman. Here’s one from author Dick Lochte:

“Retired octogenarian B-movie producer Patrick Bronstein has had short but memorable hilarious curmudgeonly appearances in several of Kimmel’s Adriana Hofstetter mysteries.  Here, let loose in his own book of reminiscences, he takes us on a laugh-out-loud sixty-year tour of his seemingly benighted career of producing cheap knock-offs. At the same time, Kimmel presents a wittily critical mini-history of the stages through which motion pictures have passed since the 1950s.  There’s a brief cameo that plays into one of the novel’s unique themes – the symbiosis that exists between celebrities and fans. Great fun!”

Dick Lochte, author of Sleeping Dog

And here’s the blurb from author D.C. Fontana

“PATRICK BRONSTEIN PRESENTS delivers a laugh or a smile on every page!  As a young author conducts deep interviews with a movie producer for a biography, we learn the ups and downs of the old man’s life and career as the producer of “C” movies from the ‘50s into the late 20th Century.  And we get a tour of the finest restaurants in Los Angeles as well.  This novel pulls the reader in — entertains — and educates — with every chapter.  It’s a great read.”

D.C. Fontana, writer for Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Streets of San Francisco, Babylon 5 and more.

Aren’t those lovelier than lovely blurbilicious blurbs? I was very happy with both. Funnily in all three blurbs I had to edit out some spoilers that I just don’t want spoiled.

The next thing of importance is that yesterday afternoon we launched the Indiegogo campaign for the LA show, which I can now reveal is called L.A. Now and Then. We’ve made a fun video and there are some really interesting perks, so check it out and please contribute if you can. The first two days are most important for contributions, as that sets the tone for the rest of the campaign. We’ll love you for a very long time if you can help out with this worthwhile thing. Yesterday was an okay day. I slept a little less than eight hours. The helper came by and picked up some stuff – the next couple of days are, in essence, her final days being the interim interim helper, as the helper helper has now returned and is resuming her duties. I had a Chinese Chicken salad and a bagel for lunch, then came home. I spent over two hours prepping the Indiegogo campaign and making sure everything was just so, then launched it. I then put a long list of DVDs that I’m getting rid of – it’s in yesterday’s posts on the discussion board, so check it out if you feel like. Several are already spoken for. After all that, I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on the Flix of Net entitled The Harvest – it was sold as a horror movie and normally I won’t go near those, but the stars were Samantha Morton and Michael Shannon (the film was made in 2013 but didn’t screen until last year, and even then I don’t think it had a theatrical release). The director is John McNaughton who made Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and Wild Things. What I read sounded intriguing enough to at least watch a few minutes of it, but I was kind of hooked immediately and stayed with it. It’s not a horror film at all, so that’s thing one. Thing two is it’s more of a psychological thriller but there really aren’t any thrills to speak of. There IS suspense, and it’s an unsettling movie, but boy did they not know what to do with it, clearly. The pace for the first fifty minutes is deliberately slow just as it should be, so naturally the kiddies of today hate that – they want some entrails in their face in the first thirty seconds. It’s also beautifully shot, and the direction is very much in the classic mold. I suspect the director was going for a slightly fairy tale feeling (a dark fairy tale) and for me it just worked. Ms. Morton is excellent and very much in Kathy Bates territory, and Mr. Shannon is very good, too. But it’s the two young teen performers who are the heart of the film and they’re both great. Peter Fonda makes an appearance as the girl’s grandpa – he even says “Far out” at one point. The production design is really top-notch, and so is the musical score by George S. Clinton. It’s not a movie that’s going to be for everyone, and a lot of what I read has people thinking the plot holes are huge, while I think they don’t matter at all if you accept the sort of fairy tale aspect of the director’s approach to the film, but if you feel like something offbeat, you might just enjoy this like I did. There’s no gore and best of all, no phony baloney jump scares.  The title, by the way, has nothing to do with the film and is another reason nobody probably saw it.

After that, I did some work on the computer, told the singer I’ve now been waiting on for five days that as of today I move on – can’t wait anymore.

Today, I’m hopefully seeing Grant Geissman so we can put the finishing touches on the book and get it into the publisher by Thursday. I’ll eat at some point, finish casting, finish choosing songs, finish assigning songs, and then I’ll get everyone their music.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, my first haircut post Teddy’s death, and I think on the weekend we’re doing a birthday dinner for Sami, who turned sixteen a few days ago.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, hopefully put the finishing touches on the book, eat, do all things Kritzerland, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear readers any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have gotten the two latest blurbs and hoping we have a successful LA a GoGo Indiegogo campaign.
