THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING NUTS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, what the HELL has happened to Beer Nuts? Yes, I am asking that question: What the HELL has happened to Beer Nuts? I discovered Beer Nuts in the early 1970s and got addicted to them. You could buy them in any liquor store or market anywhere at any time on any day. Of course, peanuts of any kind are hugely caloric, so I had to be careful, but the small two-ounce or whatever bags did little damage and boy were they good. I remember three or four years ago having a craving and going to the liquor store right down the street where I’ve gotten them since moving here – and not finding them. I figured they were out and just went without. But I recently went there and they still didn’t have them and the owner told me they haven’t carried them in years. Apparently no one bought them anymore. I find that hard to believe, frankly. So, I went to several other liquor stores and markets and Beer Nuts have completely gone the way of the dodo bird. They have disappeared off the damn face of the earth, at least in stores. But here’s the fascinating thing – they’re still going strong. How they can be going strong when you can’t find them anywhere is anyone’s guess. Amazon carries them, but they’re frankly a little pricey there. But if you go to the Beer Nuts site, they’re very inexpensive and you can order from there. I just did – and no tax and free shipping. I’ll try to be a good boy with them, but I’ve got a hankering. So, one day, I’ll just eat maybe a soup and sandwich combo for under six hundred calories, and then I can have three ounces of Beer Nuts, which will make me very happy. Thus concludeth The Mystery of the Missing Nuts.

Yesterday was a perfectly reasonable day. I got nine hours of sleep, got up, did stuff on the computer, and then had some low-cal no-fat hot dogs for my main meal o’ the day. They weren’t all that, actually. Then I cast one more person for the March Kritzerland and assigned one of the three songs for that person. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched a motion picture on the Flix of Net entitled Experimenter, the story of social psychologist Stanley Milgram. He’s not someone I really knew about so I found the film absolutely fascinating. I’m not sure it’s a movie for everyone (it was a complete dud at the box-office, although critics liked it), but I have to say I thought it was really good. The cast was excellent, especially Peter Sarsgaard as Milgram. Winona Ryder is in it, too, and so are several well-known actors in what amount to cameo roles. The director, who has heretofore mostly done short films, took a very interesting approach to the film. He breaks the fourth wall, the visuals have total artifice, it’s completely surreal at times, and, for me, it all works. The score is also really top notch. This one is highly recommended by the likes of me – not sure it will be up everyone’s alley but it was sure up mine and hopefully it will be up yours – in a nice way, of course.

After that, I decided to list a slew of CDs for you dear readers, all my productions, mostly Varese Sarabande. I just have way too much stuff and I don’t really need all this excess, so if you weren’t around yesterday and are interested, the list is in yesterday’s posts on the discussion board, so check it out. There are several one-of-kind items, too – a couple of those have already gone. The price is right, too.

Then I watched a bit of Hercules Unchained, then went to Gelson’s and got the same kind of small steak I had the previous night, since I’d eaten under 500 calories. So, I still came in at under 1000. After I ate that, I did yet more work on the computer, then saw the video for the LA Indiegogo campaign that we’ll launch probably on Tuesday. Marshall did a GREAT job on it – it’s really appealing and really sells what we’re doing well. Not one note from the likes of me. The underscore for it is my opening song for the show, which is called “This Is the City” – so you’ll hear the music (no lyrics) when you watch the video. And when you hear the opening chords to the video, know that that’s how we’re opening the show – I’ve written narration for the show in the style of the show the music is from – it’s really funny and will start our show off in the perfect way.

Today, I’ll be up by ten, and then must do a Costco run. Once that’s done, I’ll grab something light to eat, and then I have to be at the El Portal Theater at four to oversee the sound check and the way everything is set up. Then it’s the Robby Awards. I will, of course, have a full report for you.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, getting the final two blurbs and the book to the publisher, finishing casting and song choices and assigning them, getting the event page up, and a lot of other stuff.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a Costco run, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, oversee sound check for the Robby Awards, and then attend same. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite nutmeats? What were the first kinds of nuts you ever ate? What are the most exotic nuts you ever ate? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have solved The Mystery of the Missing Nuts.
