THE OSCAR RACE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had our Annual Oscar Bash last night and I think over the last few years the Oscars have sunk so low that no one cares anymore and that includes coming to our Oscar Bash. To give you a few interesting factoids: Back in 2007 we had our Oscar Bash. That evening turned into our highest posting day ever, one I’m quite certain we will never achieve again or even get close to. Back in 2007 Facebook was not a “thing” yet – everything was MySpace. This was the place to be, frankly. The Oscars of course had begun their descent but there was still enough fun where you could have a great Oscar Bash. By the time the show began we already had 845 posts on about twenty-seven pages. By the end of that evening the post count was over 2,000. On that night alone, those posts had over 57,000 views. We’ve had other incredible posting days and most of them were the Oscars and the Tonys, with a couple of wacky days when we all just went nuts and posted like crazy. In fact, the second highest posting day of 1,900 posts was exactly one of those crazy days. Those were our glory days, Oscar Bash-wise. The last few years here have had less and less postings – still nothing to sneeze at, but nowhere near our glory days. That’s because a lot of people stopped watching and caring and chose not to join the partay just to even have fun.

But last night’s Oscar show was the worst broadcast in Oscar history. It was unbearable from start to finish, and it was certainly the worst directed Oscar show ever. I think we all knew what the tone of the evening was going to be, due to the ridiculous boycott some people of color made, and due to the ridiculous stance the Academy has taken – trying to “fix” one thing, while making something else totally ageist and just as offensive. Of course, these idiots don’t care about the older Academy members, why would these entitled people care about those that were there long before them. The pandering to the younger demographic last night was absolutely nauseating. There was not an iota of class or style. It was crass and crude and rude, and you have to start right at the top with the completely unfunny Chris Rock, who made the ENTIRE evening about race. I’m sure he was abetted in that by the producers, but really, shame on all of them. With every single utterance he spit in the face of those who WERE nominated. The Oscars should never be about race – always talent. And this year, the talent nominated happened not to be of color – the last few years there have been plenty people of color both nominees and winners. But the most reprehensible thing about last night was it wasn’t about diversity at all – unless diversity only involves African-American folks. It was just disgusting. And note to Chris Rock: One of the most important lessons a person in comedy has to learn is when the joke is over – when the joke reaches its expiry date. The joke was over in two minutes, and yet he kept on doing it for the entirety of the show. I found the president of the Academy and her speechifying to be unworthy of the Oscars and she should be booted out of there. I don’t watch the Oscars to hear a bunch of people spout their causes – I do not CARE about that stuff on the Oscar broadcast. As I said, no style, go class, just predictable behavior by people who should just shut the hell up and thank people and get off the stage.

I was happy that Ex Machina took at least one award away from Mad Max: Fury Road. I was happy that Alicia Vikander won, and her speech was short and sweet and on point. I was happy that Mark Rylance won because in my opinion he really deserved it for his subtle performance. I wasn’t thrilled with the director choice – I just don’t like the guy’s movies all that much and I think there were better directed films last year, especially Bridge of Spies – of course Spielberg wasn’t even nominated. I was rooting for Siorse Ronan but Brie Larson did a good job, so that wasn’t really that upsetting, although, for me, Ronan gave the most affecting performance of the year. When Leonardo DiCaprio finally one his Oscar (not too much of a fan), he used his time to speechify and I just wanted to throw my shoe at him. You finally won your damn award, just be gracious and thank people and GET OFF.

The banter was completely unfunny, as were the sub-Saturday Night Live film sequences. And the show came in at over three-and-a-half hours long. It was unbearable. Our postings were much more fun than the show and I just wish the usual suspects who can’t be bothered to join our merrymaking, had, because it would have even been more fun.  The show was an embarrassment of the highest order from start to finish.

Prior to that horribleness, I’d gotten a bit over nine hours of sleep, which I really needed. Then I went to Gelson’s and got some stuff for my meal o’ the day, picked up two little packages, and then came home. I had two little tuna sandwiches, and, later, some popcorn, so a very low-cal day, plus I did a jog.

I spent two-and-a-half glorious hours listening to the new master for an upcoming project – a two-CD set involving two movies, each disc being over seventy-eight minutes in length. The music and sound is absolutely amazing – what a thrill to finally be able to have these two movies with every note of music recorded. Both have been out before but nowhere near our length – we have a lot of not previously released tracks, we have alternates and all kinds of goodies. I have to decide if this will be the first in our Elite line (digi packaging), with less than 1000 units and a higher price point.

That was basically my day, and then it was time for our partay. After the show, I just did stuff on the computer.

Today, I’ll do a jog, eat, and then we have our first Kritzerland rehearsal, which I’m really looking forward to. After that, I’ll relax. The helper and her fiancé will be clearing out of the Studio City storage facility and moving that stuff into the North Hollywood facility.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, our final audition for the LA show, the second Kritzerland rehearsal, our stumble-through, and then a few days later, our show. Oh, and March. Can you believe it? Today is the final day of February – that’s just crazy. And let me just say that it is my fervent hope and prayer that March will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. And I hope I wake up to some good news on this final day of February.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, eat, have a rehearsal, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Your thoughts on the Oscars and your memories of the broadcasts that were actually fun and classy. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, thoroughly disgusted by The Oscar Race, with an emphasis on the latter.
