February 1, 2016:

WHO PUT THE “BRU” IN FEBRUARY?

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it’s February. Just like that, it’s February. In other words, it is no longer January. January has hit the dust and February has made its presence known. So, before I go any further may I just say that it is my fervent hope and prayer that February will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. Frankly, I like any month that has a “r” after a “b”, don’t you? I think someone was drunk when they came up with the spelling of February, and it would be fun to know who put the “bru” in February. In any case, it is February and I don’t care who knows it.

Yesterday, the final day of January, was a perfectly fine day. I did not get much sleep, maybe five hours. Soon after I got up the rains came. About two hour in, the rain got really heavy and naturally that caused havoc all over Los Angeles, because, you know, even though we’ve had the worst draught of all time, four hours of rain the city simply cannot handle. It is a conundrum, to be sure. And on top of that, Time Warner’s Internet went down and stayed down for at least four hours. Whilst that was all going on, I did get a miracle and one has to be grateful for that. So, we start February with a miracle, which is a good thing.

I did some work on the computer (not on the Internet, obviously) and that work took about ninety minutes. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish. Oh, and the rain stopped and the sun was instantly out. So much for the worst storm in history.

Yesterday, I watched a motion picture entitled Target Earth, a 1954 low-budget sci-fi movie. All I can tell you is, those who read the new book will maybe understand, if they put two and two together, why I felt like watching it. Richard Denning stars. This movie scared the crap out of me as a kid, and to watch it now is just so funny to me – I mean this wouldn’t scare ANYONE today on any level – it would just get laughs. Anyway, it’s always fun to revisit these kinds of childhood films. After that, I went back to the Tower Records Blu-ray and watched the extras. Then the Internet finally came back. I also made some spaghetti for my meal o’ the day.

Then I watched Grease Live – it was fun to see our very own Barry Pearl and also Didi Conn, both from the film. And what we basically were served up WAS the film in just about every way. There was a new song I didn’t care for, but basically it was just an aping of the film. It had good energy and it was also long.

Then I got the second proofer’s manuscript back and spent the rest of the evening entering some of the fixes, those that needed no comment from Muse Margaret. And I flagged those that do and hopefully I’ll get those comments this morning so I can finalize this. I’m not at all sure proofer three is going to get me her stuff in time, but we’ll see. As always, after two really thorough proofings, it was funny to see what I and others still hadn’t caught.

Today, which is the first day of February, I’ll hopefully chat with Muse Margaret as soon as I arise, so I can run stuff by her – several things are style choices and if she agrees with them, then that’s more than half of what I’m running by her – actually it’s probably 80% of what I’m running by her, and then I can just go from thing to thing to fix those. After that, I’ll eat, hopefully pick up some packages (not that I’m expecting anything), and work on the Kritzerland show.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals and then getting ready for the Robby Awards show, which is a week from today. I think I have a couple of things to see, too, and I’ll probably pay a visit to Mystery and Imagination Books to tell them about the new book.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora and the gavotte, for today we have two birthdays to celebrate.  The first birthday to celebrate belongs to dear reader Kerry.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader Kerry.  On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER KERRY!!!

And our second birthday is to our very own Donald Feltham.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own Donald Feltham. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN DONALD FELTHAM!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, converse with Muse Margaret, enter whatever fixes she deems necessary, eat, hopefully pick up packages, and work on the Kritzerland show. Today’s topic of discussion: In the best of all possible worlds, what classic musicals would you like to see done live on TV? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall greet the day – and don’t forget that it is my fervent hope and prayer that February will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
