ANOTHER OP’NIN’, ANOTHER NOTES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, another op’nin’ another notes, we’ll write and write and we’ll see what floats, some Kiss Me Kate songs are good for quotes, it’s another op’nin’ of another notes. What am I, Cole Porter all of a sudden? Strange notes, but true notes, that’s just how I do notes, I’ll try, yes, I’ll try, so in love with notes am I. First of all, I had a rough night of sleep so perhaps dear reader Jeanne was right when she thought what ails me might be a bug. I got about six hours of sleep. Part of the problem was when I was up at five-thirty I made the mistake of checking e-mails and there was one from Grant with his song for the LA show (my lyrics, mostly – he added a couple of lines) – it was so catchy and fun, but I’d only written two verses and part of the bridge so I had to finish the lyric and that’s all I thought about whilst trying to fall back asleep.

Once up, I immediately went to work on the lyric and finished it in about forty minutes and sent it off to Grant so he can redo his demo with complete lyrics. What I love about it is it’s unlike anything else in the show, and it will really help in act one where I have it positioned. After that, we did a Costco run, buying the usual water and Diet Coke, big boy bottle of Airborne, and a big boy bottle of Excedrin Extra Strength. They didn’t have Excedrin PM, so I’ll pick up a small bottle of that in case I need it for headaches before bedtime. But I think I got through all of yesterday without a headache. I also got another synth mock-up of a Lanny orchestration, which was quite beautiful.

After the run, I went and had a Chinese chicken salad and a bagel for my meal o’ the day, then I came back home. I did some work on the LA show, had a few telephonic conversations, and then finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a German motion picture from Germany entitled Sophie Scholl, a story about Sophie Scholl, who was a young member of a group called the White Rose, a non-violent anti-Nazi resistance group, who mostly distributed leaflets. She and her brother were arrested and ultimately executed for treason. It’s a really well done film, with a beautiful performance by Julia Jentsch, and the film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2006. The only nitpick for me was a less than stellar musical score. But it’s well worth watching, especially for the performances. The Blu-ray transfer is fine.

After that, I wrote some liner notes, I took a shower, did more work on the computer and just relaxed.

Today, we have our first Kritzerland rehearsal, which I’m looking forward to. Prior to it I’ll eat, and hopefully the hardcovers will arrive on time and we can get them shipped out before the helper leaves for a week – everything is prepared, so we should be able to as long as they get here. Rehearsal should be done by six-thirty and then I can relax and watch something.

Tomorrow, I’m lunching with Sami and her mom, then we’re going to have a little work session after. I’m sure I’ll work on the LA show some more, and then I’ll probably lock the script until I get the Vilanch sketch, presuming I get it – there’s a placeholder for it and I’m just trying to be patient. Thursday is our second rehearsal, Saturday is our stumble-through, and Sunday is our sound check and show. And a week later, we rather amazingly go into rehearsal for the LA show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, eat, hopefully pick up hardcovers, ship books, have a rehearsal, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite architectural wonders – buildings, houses, whatever? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have finished another closin’ of another notes.
