L.A. NOW AND THEN – OPENING NIGHT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, our little show has opened. It was a mostly splendid opening night, marred only by a projector problem that hadn’t been tested prior to the show (needless to say, that will now be added to the list of pre-show stuff) and which simply didn’t work until about eight minutes into the show. So, for example, for the first number we had only the stage right wall projections, which are “then” but none of the stage right wall projections, which are now. The second number was the same, and then thankfully it was righted by the fourth number (the third thing in the show is a quick sketch). Everything worked perfectly after that. There were many laughs, and the end of act one worked like a dream. The second act was the best it’s been, too – with the Bruce Vilanch sketch finally landing as I always knew it could and would. He was very pleased with it. We had a lot of our writers there – in addition to Bruce Vilanch we had Richard Sherman, Adryan Russ, Doug Haverty, Michele Brourman, Karen Gottlieb, David Wechter, and Wayne Moore. Our wonderful choreographer was with us, Cheryl Baxter, and there were lots and lots of other swell people with us. As always seems to happen, there were about fifteen no-shows – I couldn’t believe it, really – we’ve been turning people away for days. So irritating. I do know that two agents from Paradigm were supposed to be there – not surprising that agents think it’s okay to just shine on a show.

After, they had a little party for us in the foyer of the big theater – that was lovely, and I must say everyone hung around for a long time. Then Doug and I and two cast members who live in Burbank went to the Coral Café for a few nachos. They were great, but I now feel extremely nauseous and I hope that nausea goes the HELL away.

Prior to all that, I got eight hours of sleep, maybe a bit more, got up, did stuff, then went and had a cup of soup and a sandwich. Then I just relaxed until it was time to go to LACC.

Today, she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon, so I’ll go do stuff until noon, return, shower and then mosey on over to LACC for our matinee. Then I’ll probably get a bite to eat somewhere, or maybe even come home for an hour or so. Then it’s the evening performance – I never can quite get an audience count, but I think we’re light for the evening show and hopefully that will change.

Tomorrow, other than seeing Camp Rock at three, is a complete day of rest and relaxation – I’m not doing one iota of work. Monday is all Kritzerland all the time, and then it’s meetings and meals, our pick-up rehearsal on Wednesday, then we begin our five show closing weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, attend our matinee, and then our evening show. Today’s topic of discussion: What are the most memorable opening nights you’ve attended? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, so happy we got through opening night so well.
