THE ALARM THAT DID NOT GO OFF

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I set my iPad alarm for ten and yet it did not ring at ten or any other time. I did everything correctly and yet when I opened the iPad when I finally awoke at noon it was not on the clock page, which it has to be. Damn them, damn them all to hell. While it was nice to get ten hours of sleep, I had things to do, places to go, people to see. In fact, a mere thirty minutes later Mr. James Marsden, his business manager, and the guy who does all the tree and yard work, showed up because there’s some stuff that has to be done, including a new fence because the old fence is leaning onto another property. So, we all hung out there for a half-hour. After they left, I went and did some banking, bought a quarter pound of lox from Jerry’s, something I have NEVER done before, and came home and had a couple of bagels, lox, and cream cheese – they were most yummilicious, I must say. I haven’t had a bagel, cream cheese, and lox in probably a decade.

After that, I did some work on the Kritzerland show, and I do believe we’ve finally got a musical director so we can now schedule rehearsals and get the event page up on Facebook. Then I got this wonderful little quote to use for the LA show:

“Producer/Director/Writer Bruce Kimmel scores a home town-home run with his newest endeavor, “L.A. Now and Then,” one of the most intriguing musical revues in recent memory.  Working with over a dozen contributing collaborators of the highest pedigree, a top notch creative team, and a cast who – through carefully crafted songs, spirited choreography, and keenly etched monologues – tell the tales of the west coast metropolis with such an enthusiastic eagerness, you can’t help but become emotionally involved throughout the passage of what is nothing less than a spectacular sentimental journey.  All aboard.  You’re in for one hell of a ride!”  – State of the Arts / LA Talk Radio.

Then I did a bit more work on the computer, had some telephonic calls, and then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish, eventually eating two more bagels just because I could.

Last night, I finished watching A Kiss Before Dying – it’s just not quite good enough and one wishes it were. Of course the remake was a hundred times worse. But it’s a book with a pull the rug out from under you moment that is simply a literary device and it just can’t work in a movie. Robert Wagner’s second love interest in the film is Virginia Leith, who is very comely here, and who’d go on to make the rather infamous nutty motion picture The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. The transfer is weak and I’m not at all sure why – I believe the DVD is better in every way.

I then went to the Flix of Net and watched a French motion picture from France entitled The Lady in the Car With Glasses and a Gun. I’d always been intrigued by the title of this, but could never catch up with the original film version made in 1970 with Samantha Eggar and Oliver Reed. This remake is quite watchable and I really enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s not perfect by any means, but the lead actress, who’s actually not French but Scottish (you would never know) is really terrific and she makes the whole thing worthwhile. Both films were adapted from a 1966 novel by French writer Sebastian Japrisot – he was quite popular and a lot of films were made from his books – aside from the two based on this book, the film The Sleeping Car Murders is based on a book by him, as is Rider on the Rain, A Very Long Engagement, Adieu, Ami, Trap for Cinderella (two film versions), And Hope to Die, and a few others. He was known as the Grahame Greene of France. It’s interestingly directed and has an interesting score. If you have Netflix, you might want to give it a try.

After that, I relaxed and did more stuff on the computer.

Today, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, eat, and then we have a pick-up rehearsal – I’m not sure we’ll run the entire show, but we’ll do most of it and make sure we get our good pace and energy back.

Tomorrow we have two shows so that will be my day. I know a bunch of folks coming to the evening show, including our very own dear reader Jeanne. Friday I have stuff to do, then I’ll sup with Mrs. Barry Pearl (Cindy), and she’ll be my guest at the show. And then Saturday is two shows and our closing, which I will be very sad about.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, hopefully pick up some packages, eat, have a pick-up rehearsal, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hopefully without a repeat of The Alarm That Did Not Go Off.
