THE FINAL FIVE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the good news is the alarm went off. Therefore I did not oversleep and therefore I got more stuff done and therefore I therefore had a fine little morning and a fine little day and a fine little evening. I got nine hours of sleep or thereabouts. Once up, I did the usual old stuff – answered e-mails, had telephonic calls, worked on the Kritzerland show – all songs are chosen except for about two, so I can now get everyone their music. We have a great cast for this one: The elusive Guy Haines, Constance Jewell Lopez, Jean Louisa Kelly, Eric Petersen, Keri Safran, and Sami Staitman. The show is a tribute to the great singer/songwriters of the 1970s. Guy Haines, in an unusual turn of events, will be singing not one but at least two songs that he recorded – Tim Moore’s beautiful Second Avenue, and a duet with Keri Safran of Here You Come Again.

I really don’t know where most of the day went, but I found myself having to hustle to get to LACC on time for our pick-up rehearsal. I did make it with time to spare, so that was good. We ran almost the entire show, and I stopped a couple of times to just clean up stuff and give a couple of tiny notes. The cast was in good spirits and health, which was nice. They’ve loved getting the reviews – it doesn’t happen very often at LACC and we’ve been extremely blessed to get such nice ones.

After we finished, our MD and a couple of our actors who I was giving a ride home to (they live in the Bank of Bur) went to the Smoke House for a bite to eat. I hadn’t eaten all day so I was really hungry. Of course we began with the famous garlic cheese bread. I decided not to eat an actual meal and had a cup of clam chowder, a grilled artichoke, a shrimp cocktail, and a baked potato. So, a really calorie-friendly meal, save for the mountain of butter I used on the potato, but I only hate half of that. The two actors both had the same thing – some kind of seafood brochette. And our MD had the Steak Sinatra, which is his favorite thing. For dessert we all had fresh strawberries. It was ever so yummilicious.

Then I took the actors home and then I came home, where I had to answer a plethora of e-mails, approve some packaging that’s now gone off for official approval, work on the Kritzerland show, and do the last of my posting about our final five performances. I suppose I can vent here that a shocking number of my close personal friends cannot be bothered to get off their butt cheeks and see the damn show. It’s so off-putting to me and I cannot wait until I’m invited to their shows – I think you know what the answer will be and I will be more than happy to explain why that answer is what it is.

Today, I’ll be up by ten, do stuff here, and then I have to be at LACC around two o’clock. Then we play our three o’clock show. I think we’re a bit light, but hopefully we’ll pick up students and our papering guy I think has some coming and Goldstar is sold out so that’s ten more – so I do think we’ll have at least a half a house, and hopefully more than that. Then we have an all-too-brief turnaround for the evening show – the matinee will come down around 5:05 and they have to be back by 6:15 to get in mics and stuff for the 7:15 curtain. A little nutty to schedule that close. For the evening now, the count is better and I’m hoping we pick up even more by show time. Sami’s mom is coming to video the show, as I need a good record of it for staging purposes. If she gets everything well and it’s a good show, then that’s that, but if it isn’t, she’ll come back one more time to do it again.

Tomorrow, I have stuff to do during the day, and then we have our evening show. I think we already have over half a house for that, so I’m sure that will pick up and do better, too. Saturday we have our matinee and then our closing performance, both of which will be recorded so we can do the CD release for the Indiegogo contributors. I’m not certain will release it beyond those folks, it really depends if I’m okay with the result. Sunday I will already begin missing this show, but I’ll have to dive right in and write the commentary for the Kritzerland show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, see our matinee and evening shows, I’ll eat at some point, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages before going to LACC, and maybe some of us will go out after the show. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite appetizers, both classic and new-fangled? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as we begin the final five performances of the LA show.
