BREVITY IS THE SOUL OF WIT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I only got about two-and-a-half hours of sleep yesterday so forgive my if these here notes have brevity. Brevity, of course, is the soul of wit. Or is wit the soul of brevity? Or is soul the brevity of wit. These are the questions that are roaming around the windmills of my mind. I could always ask Hamlet but, you know, he’s a Great Dane and is currently eating a Danish. I wonder if he ever ate a Finnish? I wonder if he was able to Finnish the Danish? You see the problem here, don’t you? The problem is I only slept two-and-a-half hours and therefore I am doing what they call riffing in popular music.

Yesterday was quite a long day. I did go back and stayed in bed for an hour to no avail. I wish there’d been avail, but alas avail was missing in action. So, I printed out orders and did some work on the computer, and then the technician from DirecTV finally arrived. He went up on the roof, where he immediately sang a rousing rendition of Up on the Roof – if only he’d brought his fiddling partner he could have done Fiddler Up on the Roof. We don’t allow groaning here at haineshisway.com. In any case, it was what I suspected – the damn trees had completely covered the dish. I’ve been trying for two years to get this stuff trimmed back to no avail – that damn avail again. We’ve had two potential tree trimmers here in the last two weeks and a third is coming on Monday and that’s it – they have to choose one and get this damn thing done. In the meantime, the technician on the roof managed to clean out enough of it so that I’m getting signal again.

Then I was hungry so I had all the Wacky Noodles ingredients here so I made some Wacky Noodles because brevity is the soul of Wacky Noodles. I made about ten ounces of them (more than I’d intended) but only ate about seven ounces or so. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish and we all know fish is the brevity of sole.

Yesterday, I finished watching a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T – what an odd motion picture but I have always loved it. Back in 1975 on the final day of shooting The First Nudie Musical at the Fox Venice, a fellow arrived and sold me the very first two 16mm prints I ever owned – my co-director was a big film collector and he gave me the habit. Those first two prints were IB Technicolor like new prints of The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and The Five Thousand Fingers of Dr. T. Both prints were absolutely spectacular and like new. I showed it often over the years. The film was a HUGE flop – no one wanted to know from it, they were confused by it, they didn’t understand its tone, but I loved it from the very first minute I saw it. I loved the sets and the costumes and the actors, but mostly I loved the songs and that crazy, brilliant ballet with the instruments, choreographed by Eugene Loring. It’s fun now to pick out George Chakiris as one of the trombone players. That number is one of the most wildly imaginative production numbers ever put on film, a work of utter genius. So, how is the Blu-ray? Well, Sony gave it to Mill Creek for a reason – it’s on older transfer, the one done for the Blu-ray back around 2007. It looks pretty good a lot of the time – thankfully the color is VERY accurate, but the film is also frequently out of registration, and when Grover Crisp of Sony finally gets around to revisiting it, I have no doubt that transfer will be absolutely amazing. This one isn’t amazing, but it gets the job done.

Then I watched a bit of the new Disney Blu-ray of Treasure Island and it looks just great and is a good deal of fun. All day I’d been waiting for a UPS delivery – the Darling Daughter sent some cherries. Well, the latest they were supposed to be here was five. Five came and went and the idiot didn’t get here until eight-thirty. And the cold pack in the box had failed so I’m hoping they’re okay to eat – I instantly put them in the refrigerator. Then a friend came over so I could meet her new dog, Pixie. Said dog is very sweet and cute. We visited (they’d walked all the way from Coldwater and Riverside, about two miles), and then I drove them home. She lives right next to the Whole Foods so I went in there and they had some of that good sweet chili shrimp thing, so since shrimp has almost no calories, I bought some, came home, and ate it all up. It was a bit spicier than last time, but it was really good. After that, I just relaxed.

Today, I can’t remember if she of the Evil Eye is back in town or if that’s next Saturday – hoping it’s next week and not this morning but if it IS this morning I’ll just go have something very light to eat whilst she does her thing. If she doesn’t come I hope to sleep quite late. Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, then relax until it’s time to go to Disney Hall for the concert. I’m going down there early and will sup before – that way I’ll get good parking. I will, of course, have a full report for you.

Tomorrow, I have a two-hour work session with Kay Cole, otherwise I’m just relaxing – the potential Father’s Day partay has been called off due to brevity being the soul of wit. Next week is very busy with many things to do.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, stay home or leave, sleep in or not, hopefully pick up packages, relax, and then see a concert at Disney Hall after supping first. Today’s topic of discussion: What really weird movies like Dr. T do you like best? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happily knowing that brevity is the soul of wit.
