THE MEAT OF THE NOTES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, let’s just get to the meat of these here notes, shall we? Not to the fish of these here notes, mind you, or the chicken of these here notes, or even the tofu of these here notes, no, let us just get to the meat of these here notes. Let us bypass the appetizers and the salads and soups, let’s forget the vegetables and potatoes, let’s skip the desserts and just get to the damn meat of these here notes.

Yesterday turned out to be a fun day. I got eight hours of good sleep, got up, answered e-mails, and then my engineer said we could finesse the mixes, so I got ready and went over to his house at twelve-thirty. And so we began finessing the mixes. First of all, this sounds so much better than it has any right to – it has a really punchy “live” feeling that I just love. Everyone sounds good, the band sounds great, and the overall sound is terrific for the most part. I won’t know until today at some point how long it runs – we may have to trim it down if for some reason it comes in over seventy-nine minutes. I think there’s around seventy-two minutes of music including the dance music and the entr’acte, and if that’s the case we may just squeeze by so I can use the entire We Look Ahead sequence, which runs about twelve minutes with the song and monologue. I’m willing to leave off the bows, as it’s the dance music from an earlier number, so that may buy us what we need. And we’ve left some of the fun play-offs in for now, and those could go too, but I’m really hoping we just come in on time and can use it all.

Then engineer worked some real magic with this stuff, and then I worked a little of my own – can’t really tell you what as magician’s don’t reveal their tricks but let’s just say some good sleight of hand was used and I’m just really happy with the result. That all took about four hours, and now he’ll prepare the tracks for mastering and also get them to me so we can get this announced, hopefully on Thursday morning.

After that, I was going to go to Whole Foods, but I noticed the parking lot at Hugo’s was completely empty. I know I swore I wouldn’t return, but I figured why not, so I went and had a Caesar salad and pasta papa, both excellent – I was just about the only one in the restaurant, and the snippy little entitled gal who irritated me last time was not in attendance, so that was good. After that, I picked up a couple of packages and came home. I did some work on the computer and then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a pretty awful motion picture on the Flix of Net (my last for a while) entitled Standoff, starring Thomas Jane and Lawrence Fishburn. They must have received decent salaries because this script was from hunger. The director has little talent (he’s also the writer) and he’s trying very hard to make a contemporary western and it’s just ludicrous and the dialogue is terrible. The best thing about it was its running time, which, sans credits, was about seventy-nine minutes. I then watched the third episode of an old Fox TV show from a decade ago called Magic’s Biggest Secrets Revealed, a typical Fox show from that era, but interesting if you want to know how things are done. The magician revealing the tricks is masked and doesn’t speak so that he won’t be blackballed. But I gather that he does reveal himself at the end of the final show. It’s amazing how, after seeing how certain tricks are done, you can begin guessing how the next one is done. Tacky, but fun.

Today, someone is coming at eight – the person who was going to do all the work on the fence and cutting back all the bad shrubbery never got back to anyone, so a new guy is coming. I’m not thrilled to get up that early. Then a local dealer is coming by. At some point I’ll eat something, hopefully pick up packages, and then I’ll wait for tracks to arrive and hopefully we can get the LA show cast album announced on Thursday.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, seeing a concert at Disney Hall, a work session on Sunday and if that’s done early enough I’ll go to a Father’s Day partay.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, get up early, do stuff, hopefully get tracks, eat, hopefully pick up packages, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, having gotten to the meat of the notes.
