THE MR. CHOW EXPERIENCE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have been to Mr. Chow’s. As those who’ve read Patrick Bronstein Presents know one of the chapters takes place there. Now, I knew about it from the late Teddy, my hairdresser, so I knew what the good food was, where to sit, and the décor I found online, but after all these years I’ve finally had the Mr. Chow’s experience. It’s a very different kind of Chinese food – very nouveau nouveau if you get my meaning – small portions, too. But, everything is really good, so it’s all fine. I went with our very own Sandy Bainum and we had a delightful time. The tables are virtually next to each other and I had to laugh when the woman next to us sat down with her oversized Botox lips and the first thing out of her mouth was, “The new psychiatrist was really good.”

For our meal, we had a shrimp appetizer and Mr. Chow noodles. That latter was really good, and the former was, too. They brought us a free extra – dried seaweed with candied walnuts and while the sound of that made me want to vomit on the ground it was actually delicious. For our main course we shared steamed whitefish that was excellent and chicken Joanna, which was my favorite thing. And we had white rice. It was all very light so we both had desserts – Sandy had a key lime cheesecake and I had their chocolate mousse, which was out of this world.

After, we walked back to her house. She’d accidentally left her keys in the house so we sat outside and waited for her cleaning lady, who has a key, to come by. It was a lovely night and we caught up and it was just an all around very enjoyable evening. And thankfully the heat abated and it was quite pleasant out.

Prior to that, I hadn’t fallen asleep until three-thirty and I slept until one – and I really don’t like doing that but I really needed the sleep. Once up, I had lots of e-mails to answer, we continued trying to cast the August Kritzerland, I did work on the computer, had some telephonic calls, and emptied out the book room closet further, but didn’t really have time to look through that stuff yet. I did go through the posters and movie stuff, though – an original Peeping Tom British quad poster that’s very rare and pricey, and original British one sheet on the movie A Kid for Two Farthings, gorgeous Japanese posters for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort, a Spanish half sheet for one of the Commando Cody serials, and a beautiful two-panel Japanese poster for Sundays and Cybele. Then I picked up one package and then took a long route over the hill because I knew traffic would be hellish by the usual route. I had no traffic at all.

After dinner, I came home and someone had sent me a video of their club act, so I watched that.

Today, I believe there’s a slim chance that the chosen tree guy will come and begin his work, which I hope will be the case. Other than that, it’s just the usual stuff – casting, choosing songs, and there may be something happening but if there is someone will hopefully remind me of what it is.

Tomorrow something may also be happening but hopefully someone will remind me of what it is, because I haven’t a clew. I’m seeing a show tomorrow night. Saturday I’m speaking to a musical theatre group that meets once a month, and I’m looking forward to that.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, hope that the tree guy begins his work, I’ll eat, hopefully pick up some packages, and then I’ll cast and choose songs, then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have finally had the Mr. Chow Experience.
