POKEMON STOP

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, yesterday I was doing my jog, jogging along, minding my very own business, when I see to my right some guy staring intently at his cell phone. Then, without batting an eyelash, he steps directly in my path and stops. I saw it and I yelled so loud they could probably have heard me in San Diego – “MOVE!” He did move slightly forward without taking his eyes off his phone. As I passed him I called him a fun name and noticed that he was playing that horrifying game with Pokemon or whatever the HELL that is. There’s nothing like a little stupid game to turn people into little giddy children running amok, and it does have its amusing side, seeing grown people behaving like they were eight, which, truth be told, many of them still are, emotionally speaking. And a month from now no one will even acknowledge that they partook in the game. Considering Pokemon was some stupid thing from the early 90s, it’s appealing to just that generation, a generation that is now feeling all nostalgic for that sorry decade. Well, people, get in front of me, impede my progress, and I will Poke your Mon in ways you don’t even want to know about.

Other than that, yesterday just sort of existed and went by. I got about eight-and-a-half hours of sleep, got up, did the usual morning stuff – answered e-mails, had telephonic calls, and then went and had a chopped salad with a little ham and avocado dressed in red wine vinegar and no bagel, so a very low-cal meal. I came home, did some work on the computer and then did a two-and-a-half mile jog as I’m now trying to do longer jogs. I made it and did not fall on the ground or anything untoward, so that was good. And it worked off most of whatever calories the salad actually had.

I then had a few e-mail volleys, listened to some music I had to listen to, got the good news that a project we’re trying to restore is going to restore really well, and did a little writing, and even a little bit of planning for the September Kritzerland. I’m trying to write a new What If parody for that show and I have an idea I like and will try to write it soon.

Then it was time to sup with Sami and her mom – hadn’t seen them in a few weeks. We went to Jerry’s Deli of course – she and her mom shared some matzo ball soup, a baked potato, and french fries. I had a bacon and cheese omelet and an English muffin – so my entire caloric intake for the day hovered right at 1000. I am, dear readers, a man on a mission and nothing will deter me from accomplishing said mission. Then we came back here and Sami, who’d doing Urinetown at her high school, read through her lines and I gave her some pointers and direction. We did the same thing for The Addams Family. I really can’t stand Urinetown and have never understood how it made it to Broadway, how it ran, how it had a tour, and why people liked it. But, that’s just me. After that, she wanted to sing through Annie, which she’s performing at the ALS benefit, so I played it for her – she really does own that song. I said I wondered if she could do Welcome to My World if she had to, and she launched into the whole opening monologue and did it pretty much perfectly.

After that, it was listening to more music, starting to think about who I want for The Brain from Planet X staged concert benefit in November, and I also relaxed a bit.

Today will be more of the same – no real appointments, but lots to do, plus I’ll eat (I have some chicken breasts here so I’ll make those in my Wacky Noodles sauce – I may even have it over pasta rather than rice, if I can figure out exactly how to measure out five ounces of pasta out of the twelve-ounce box I have. If I can stick to five ounces, then the entire caloric count would be right around eleven or twelve hundred all in, and I’d jog two hundred of that off), I’ll jog, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then do stuff on the computer and, at some point, relax and perhaps watch a motion picture.

Tomorrow will be a similar kind of day, then Thursday and Friday are rehearsals and work sessions, Friday night I’m seeing a show, Saturday night I’m seeing Sami in Urinetown, and Sunday I think there’s some sort of meeting happening. And then things get incredibly crazy.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, eat, hopefully pick up packages, work on the computer, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What do you think of this whole Pokemon thing? And what video games did you like to play when video games first happened, and do you play any now, especially the crazy online MMORPG games? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping to never hear about this Pokemon thing again.
