PRETTY GOOD TACOS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I almost had a ME day yesterday, but in the evening hours I felt I had to do a spot of work and so a spot of work I did. But prior to the spot of work I had me a ME day. My ME day began after getting a gloriously glorious ten hours of sleep, which I really needed. Once up, I moseyed around the home environment, answered a few e-mails and took a little drive to Gelson’s, where I bought some taco shells (two shells equals a mere 120 calories – amazing), some ground beef, and various and sundried other items, came home and I sautéed the beef with some onions and made four count them four tacos. They were actually pretty good and with the meat the entire calorie count was 740 calories. And it was very filling. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Russia House. I remember not liking it, but the funny thing is when I began to watch it it immediately became apparent that I’d never seen the movie at all, not even one scene of it. So, I must have been confusing it with some other movie. So, imagine my surprise to find I was completely engrossed in The Russia House from beginning to end. It came out in 1990, and I’d say it’s more 80s than 90s because as that decade wore on, I’m not sure they could have made The Russia House in the same way. I really thought the script by Tom Stoppard was terrific. And the direction by Fred Schepisi is also terrific and the film is beautiful to look at. Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer are great. The Jerry Goldsmith score is one of his last great scores – it just works wonderfully in the film, even though he recycled a little theme from his rejected score to Alien Nation. The transfer on this Twilight Time Blu-ray is fantastic and this is highly recommended by the likes of me.

Then I did a two-and-a-half mile jog, then watched half of another motion picture, this one another Twilight Time disc, entitled The Black Stallion Returns. I’d never seen it back in the day and I’ll have more to say about it when I’ve finished watching it, probably this very evening.

After that, I took a shower, and then decided I had to do some writing – I rewrote one little thing of patter for the Michael Sterling anniversary show, and then I buckled down, Winsocki and wrote the liner notes for our next release. That took a couple of hours but it’s done and I’m sure I’ll futz and finesse it at some point today. I’ve approved the cover Doug Haverty came up with and then all I’ll have to do is the track listing and we can get this thing announced.

Today, I’ll be up by ten at the latest. If I’m actually up earlier than that I’ll do my jog in the morning, if not it has to wait until early evening. We have a rehearsal with Kerry O’Malley for the Sterling show from noon to two, and that’s followed by a meeting with my lighting designer for the ALS show, then I have to do some banking, hopefully pick up some packages, and at some point eat.

The rest of the week are rehearsals, meetings and meals, more rehearsals, rehearsals on top of rehearsals and it doesn’t really slow down until Friday. Then on Sunday we have a long day at The Federal with the band and the two ladies who are doing the Sterling show, and then we do the show that evening. Oh, and I replaced the singer who had to drop out, and send vibes and xylophones as I think we may have a guest star, too – I’ll know at some point today.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, rehearse, have a meeting, bank, eat, hopefully pick up packages and, at some point, relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite films of Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have made some pretty good tacos.
