THE BEFUDDLED SEAGULL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, yesterday I saw a real live seagull in the parking lot at Jerry’s Deli. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, yesterday I saw a real live seagull in the parking lot at Jerry’s Deli. It looked befuddled, as if it were thinking, “Why am I in the parking lot of Jerry’s Deli? I’m not a Jew, I’m not near the ocean, I’m in Studio City. What a revoltin’ development this is.” One wonders what the story is, but when I came out it was gone.

Yesterday was a very long but very productive day, which was both long and productive, very. I got up at ten after eight hours of sleep. That was productive. Then I answered some e-mails and then did a two-and-a-half mile jog. After that, I went to Jerry’s Deli, saw a befuddled seagull, and had my usual chopped salad with a little ham and dressed with red wine vinegar – total calories maybe 350 but probably less. Then I picked up a couple of very small packages, then came back home and got ready for our two o’clock rehearsal with singer Mary Callanan, who’s doing the Sterling anniversary show with Kerry O’Malley.

Mary had just flown in from Boston and came directly here. We ran all her numbers – she’s really quite good. Then Kerry arrived, they ran their duets and then we ran the entire show top to bottom and we had a fun special guest with us, watching. That was Mr. Gabrielle Ferrer, husband to Debby Boone and son to Miss Rosemary Clooney. I think he enjoyed himself. I hadn’t seen him since I recorded A Hollywood Christmas, which Debby appeared on. They’re both super nice people. I’d made one sort of major suggestion for Kerry’s half of the show, and thankfully it was taken and has been implemented – she now gets to sing her big torch song that she did when she played Rosemary Clooney’s role in White Christmas. It really helps having that. Our next time together is Thursday, but it was a very productive rehearsal.

Then our musical director and I had an hour to kill before we had a rehearsal for the ALS show so it was back to Jerry’s, where I had my other usual bacon and cheese omelet and an English muffin – so with the jog, I probably netted out at just under 1000 calories.

Then we had the ALS rehearsal – it’s a trio doing a medley from Disney animated films – we only had two of the three, but they’re great and it’s a fun number. They left and I finally got to sit on my couch like so much fish and relax. Didn’t really have time to watch anything, though.

Today, our rehearsal has been cancelled. I’ll be up by ten, I’ll try to do the jog by ten-thirty, then I have a noon o’clock lunch with our very own Robert Yacko. After that, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then I’ll come home and work on the ALS show structure for the rest of the day. I hope to relax in the evening.

Tomorrow I have a work session for the Kritzerland show, then at four we rehearse the Sterling show at a rehearsal studio with the band. We’ll run once through just doing the songs, one after another, and then we’ll run the entire show. I’ll do some small staging stuff, and take detailed performance notes and give those. Then we don’t see each other again until show day.

Friday I may have a lunch in Pasadena and I have to go over the hill to pick up something. Saturday I get to relax, although I may have a dinner thing, and Sunday is show day for the Sterling show. Then we go right into the Kritzerland rehearsals and a lot of work for the ALS show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, have a lunch meeting, hopefully pick up packages, work on the ALS show structure and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, whilst I ponder the meaning of the befuddled seagull.
