THE MOSTLY FORGOTTEN DAY IN WHICH I REMEMBERED A FEW THINGS THAT HAPPENED

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here I sit like so much fish and it’s midnight at the oasis, put your camel to bed or, in my case, put your Kimmel to bed. I must write these here notes in a hurry for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon and I must get some semblance of a good night’s beauty sleep. Therefore, let me tell you about yesterday. I can’t remember much of anything about yesterday. Oh, I remember it was Friday even though it didn’t seem like it, thanks to the long holiday weekend. I remember being awakened by the ringing of the doorbell at eight-twenty – it was the tree people come to finish the one thing they’d left undone. I let them in the yard then went right back to bed and slept until eleven.

Once up, I had the usual plethora of e-mails to answer. By the time I finished all that stuff and a few other things on the computer, it was time for food, so I went to Jerry’s Deli and had an instant replay of the meal I’d had the day before – chopped salad with a little ham and avocado thrown in, dressed in red wine vinegar, with a bagel. Michael Sterling, who hosts the Kritzerland shows at The Federal, came by and gave me something he needed to give me and we chatted about his anniversary show that I’m overseeing as a favor to him. We had a nice chat whilst I ate up all my foodstuffs. Then I went and picked up no packages, after which I came home. I then did a jog, after which I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Sunshine Boys. I’ve written about the film before. Actually, I just searched Ye Olde Columne Archives and no I have not talked about the film before. So, I’ll talk about it now. When it came out I enjoyed it but did not love it. Most of that was due to what I thought was horrible direction by Herbert Ross, and, I hate to say it, by Walter Matthau, who I felt was just so over the top that it became annoying. And I kept wishing it had been the original two stars who’d been cast – Red Skelton and Jack Benny. But Benny could not be insured (he had pancreatic cancer), and then Skelton dropped out. Benny recommended George Burns and that was a great choice and he’s really wonderful in the movie. I also enjoy Richard Benjamin. But I didn’t like the opening up of the play. Watching it last night I felt the exact same way about everything, although I did laugh a bunch of times at Matthau, which means I’ve gotten used to him playing older in the film and being who he is. But Ross’s direction, for me, is from hunger and the undoing of the film. He did much better with Simon’s The Goodbye Girl. The transfer looked just like the film should look, and that’s a good thing.

After that, I went to Gelson’s because I had to buy she of the Evil Eye some things she needed – detergent, Windex, Comet. Then I came home, had a pepperoni stick, a piece of low-cal low-fat swiss cheese and some almonds and dried cranberries. All in all, with the jog, I think I topped out at 1000 calories. I am starting to finally feel like some weight has dropped off and I will not stop until I’m where I want to be and my goal is that I’m at least halfway there by the Kritzerland anniversary show the first Sunday in September. I will have some temptations, but right now I’m not even doing a once a week splurge day, even though I’m allowed. I won’t do that for at least another three weeks.

Today, I’ll be up early, I’ll do an early jog and try to increase the distance by at least a mile, then I’ll do some stuff, then come back home, after I hopefully pick up some packages. I’ll try to make a show order and begin writing the commentary, which I really should have done yesterday. I’ll relax and then I have a dinner thing that I must attend and I will do my best to be a very good boy even though there will be many temptations.

Tomorrow I’ll continue writing the commentary until I finish. Next week is very busy – on Monday I have a walk-through at the Pasadena Playhouse for the ALS show and a meeting there with the tech folk. And I think there’s something after that. The rest of the week is meetings and meals, at least two work sessions, a dinner or two to attend, and lots of ALS planning to do.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a longer jog, do stuff, hopefully pick up packages, do some banking, relax, do a show order and write some commentary and then attend a dinner. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite salad dressings, and where have you had the best versions of them, including the much missed Roquefort dressing? And what store bought salad dressings do you favor? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have remembered a few things from the mostly forgotten day.
