THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is quite late and so I’d quite better write these here notes in quite a hurry so I can quite post them as soon as possible. Tonight’s very appropriate musical accompaniment to writing these here notes is Michel Legrand’s hyper-romantic score for The Other Side of Midnight, a rather horrible motion picture famous, as I recall, for a scene involving ice cubes. I saw it when it first came out and loathed it. It was directed by the awful Charles Jarrott, who also gave the world the film musical of Lost Horizon. I think I’ve only seen it once since, perhaps on DVD. But the title of the film is perfectly in keeping when these here notes will be posted, and Mr. Legrand’s score is sumptuous and filled with patented Legrand tunes.

Yesterday, I slept about seven-and-a-half hours when I was really hoping for about ten hours. The telephonic device rang, and that awoke me – I fell back asleep briefly, but then just got up. I did all the usual morning things one does – answer e-mails, brush teeth, splash water on the face. Then I went and did some stuff in the motor car, including a trip to Gelson’s, where I bought some foodstuffs for a couple of meals. Then I came home and made two count them two hamburgers – they had a package with just two patties in it – they were substantial and very good. I got the low calorie buns (140 calories), to which I added lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, a some ketchup and mustard. The burgers were really quite tasty and filling. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I finished watching the special features on The Manchurian Candidate Blu-ray – the final feature was this very bad and pedantic dissertation on brainwashing by some academic lady with an irritating voice. Then I went to the Flix of Net. They had Lethal Weapon 4 – I’d never seen 3 or 4 because I thought 2 was so bad. So, I watched a bit of 4 and the first fifteen minutes are so mind-bogglingly awful that it boggles the mind. It was reprehensibly stupid and I had to finally just shut it off. They also had the original, too, so I watched about forty minutes of that, and what do you know – characters, a plot, and some pace. It deserved to be a hit, but naturally they couldn’t leave it at that, and had to go get all crass and make bad sequels.

Then I did a jog, then watched about forty minutes of the new Criterion Blu and Ray of Gilda, starring Miss Rita Hayworth and Mr. Glenn Ford. It’s such an odd movie, but very entertaining. I’ll write more once I’ve finished it, but I’m going to tell you right now that I’m going to put the blame on Mame.

Then I actually nodded off for a bit, then I decided to be adventurous and I did a second jog, so that was good. I’d also bought some fresh cherries from Gelson’s and ate some of those – I really like cherries when they’re as good as these that Gelson’s get, but boy are they expensive. Then I just did some work on the computer and relaxed.

Today, I have a lot of little things to do, I’ll eat something very light, I’ll jog, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, and then I’m supping with Sami and her mom. I’m thinking it will be a two salad day so that I can remain around 1000 calories, perhaps a bit more.

Tomorrow is more of the same, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are various work sessions and rehearsals, I’m seeing some show on Friday night, and another on Saturday night, and there are a few meetings as well.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do stuff, eat something light, jog, hopefully pick up packages, and then sup with Sami and mom. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite Legrand scores and songs? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, now that it’s the other side of midnight.
