THE PASSING OF ANOTHER CAR WASH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, two years ago they closed my local car wash (actually very close to where I lived in the late 1970s in North Hollywood) that I’d been going to for decades. I found a wonderful car wash in the Oaks of Sherman, conveniently located right across the street from K’s Donuts, home of the chocolate/peanut butter donut I so love. The last time I was there to wash the motor car was about five months ago. Yesterday I drove down there to give it a thorough wash and wax and what did I find? Closed. The entire BLOCK now has an ugly green fence on it, which means up will go an apartment complex/retail thing, I’m sure. Like we need that. Literally one block away we have a huge new thing with Islands and tons of other stuff. So, I did not wash the motor car and I showed great restraint in not going right over to K’s and having two chocolate/peanut butter donuts. Now I have to find me a new car wash. There’s one in the City of Studio and people like it, but it’s always a ninety-minute deal there, with endless lines and I won’t do that. There’s one in NoHo I might try, about ten minutes from here. But I also found on Yelp a guy who comes to your house, washes, and details, so I’m calling him when I get up this morning to see if he can come today and be done by five. If not, I’ll drive to the North Hollywood car wash.

Other than that, yesterday was uneventful but fine or, conversely, fine but uneventful. I was up by nine and had a conference call at ten for thirty minutes and that went well. I heard from JoAnn Worley, who’ll happily do our ALS benefit, so that’s good. I had a cup of clam chowder and a turkey sandwich for lunch, then came home.

I did some work on the computer, listened to music, chose a few songs and assigned them then got the good news that we have our final cast member for the August Kritzerland show. Now I can gather up the music and get it to everyone and they’ll have a good long time to learn their material. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched half a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Circus of Fear, starring a hooded Christopher Lee, Leo Genn, Suzy Kendall, and others. It’s directed by John Llewellyn Moxey, who’s made a couple of decent films, including Horror Hotel and some TV movie stuff, but this thing is really awful. I’ll write more after I’ve finished it.

Then I did a jog, then had a telephonic conversation about some projects that may or may not occur next year. After that, I just relaxed and listened to more music by Ned Rorem, whose music I’ve become smitten with.

Today, I’ll probably not sleep in (although I really should) because I want to be up early to call the guy who washes cars at your home environment. If he can’t do it, then I’ll probably take a chance and go to the NoHo car wash and see if I can get in and out of there pretty quickly. Then I’ll pick up some packages, come home, finish the movie, and then the Shermans will arrive and I’ll drive us to the theater, where we’ll sup and see a production of Mary Poppins. I will, of course, have a full report for you.

Tomorrow, I intend to do almost nothing except for finishing assigning songs. I’ll have a damn ME day is what I’ll have. I’ll catch up on my movie watching and music listening and I’ll have something amusing but light to eat. And I will be keeping to my regime of jogging every day, and next week I will start going further than the mile and a half I’ve been doing this past week. Monday I may or may not attend a partay – I’ve yet to really receive an official invite so maybe it’s not happening. I have a second partay I could go to but it’s a bit of a drive. We shall see. Then the week is filled with meetings and meals, a couple of work sessions, and I’ll do a show order and write the commentary, to get that out of the way. That is often in the way, and frankly it bugs me so occasionally you just have to get that out of the damn way. Then again, when it bugs me then I have that go pound on it because who wants to be bugged by it? What the HELL am I talking about?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, hopefully get the motor car washed, hopefully pick up packages, jog, and then sup and see a production of Mary Poppins. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite kinds of donuts these days? I know they have a lot of fancy-shmancy new kinds, not that I would ever eat them, but I’m always curious to know what the adventurous donut eater is trying. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we mourn the passing of another car wash.
