EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSIE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had a splendidly splendid show last night, Michael Sterling’s tenth anniversary of booking cabaret shows in Los Angeles. It was a tribute to someone he was very close with, singer Rosemary Clooney. When things were not going smoothly a couple of months ago, I offered to oversee it and help him get it done, and he knows how organized and quick I am and so graciously brought me on board, in essence to direct the show he created. I arranged for the musical director, and of course I’d worked with Kerry O’Malley many times and had met the other singer, Mary Callanan. I advised on stuff, and then a week ago we began working on it in earnest. As I saw the layout of the show, I was able to focus some stuff, suggested we replace one song with another, and smoothed out some patter, but mostly worked with these two extraordinarily talented women on the songs. When we did our final rehearsal on Friday I was able to do a tiny bit of simple staging, added a couple of jokes to the patter, and quickly cut down and did some arranging of the second half overture (the show was in one act, but two halves). Yesterday we did a band and sound check and I was able to further smooth out some stuff musically and worked out all the entrances and exits. I’d given the ladies notes via e-mail over the weekend and boy did the brilliantly address them, in their own way, of course.

It was a sold out crowd, with lots of fun folks in attendance, including Richard and Elizabeth Sherman, who were at my front table along with Doug Haverty, Sami, and Jaidyn Young and her mom Janice. The show went really well – jokes landed, and the ladies hit it not only out of the park but out of NoHo. The pace was terrific, too. I don’t think it could have gone much better and I know Michael Sterling was pleased. We all hung out for a while after the show. Here are some fun photographs. First up is me with beautiful Kerry O’Malley and Sami.

After the show, I stopped at Gelson’s and got a tiny bit of mac-and-cheese. Prior to that, I’d slept nine hours, did a two-and-a-half mile jog, relaxed, and then moseyed on over to The Federal. For my meal there, I had a chicken breast sandwich with avocado and a teeny-tiny side salad – at the most I think about seven hundred calories but probably less. I was also wearing pants that five weeks ago I could not even button. So, weight is coming off and I will continue this diet and regimen until I’ve lost all the weight I want to. So, with the snack of mac-and-cheese probably under 1000 calories when you factor in the jog.

Today, I shall do the pick-up I kept putting off in the morning. I’ll probably leave here around ten-fifteen or so and hope to be back by noon at which point I’ll go eat my usual salad thing. Then if time permits, I’ll jog before rehearsal, if not I’ll do it after. Rehearsal is at four and will be done by six-thirty. Then I’ll go eat something else to get to 1000 calories. In the evening, I’ll do the blurb and eBlast prep for our new CD release, which I think I’ll announce on Wednesday morning.

Tomorrow and the rest of the week is all ALS stuff, our second Kritzerland rehearsal, our stumble-through, and then sound check and show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a pick-up, eat, jog, have a rehearsal, write a blurb, prepare an eBlast and announcement, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite songs of Rosemary Clooney? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that everything came up Rosie.
