LET’S GET TOGETHER, YAY YAY YAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, let’s get together, yay, yay, yay, and yay, dear readers, was the word of the day yesterday because we got the great news that Hayley Mills is flying in to do the ALS benefit. It was touch and go for days, and it didn’t look like it was going to happen, but then things turned around at the last possible second, her flight was booked and we’re all thrilled. But best of all, I’d asked that she do Let’s Get Together with Richard Sherman and she will be – that will be incredible and I cannot wait to get that on its feet. She’s flying in on Saturday, and if she isn’t too tired, we’ll have a quick rehearsal here on Sunday early evening and then I’m hoping we can take for a nice meal.

So, that was a nice way to start a day after nine hours of sleep. There was the usual volley of e-mails back and forth (all to do with the show), some telephonic calls, and then I went and had my usual salad and my usual bagel for my meal o’ the day. Then I came right back home and had a phone meeting to iron out some show details. Then I did a two-and-a-half mile jog, took care of some other business and began doing my entrances and exits diagrams. After all that I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a French motion picture from France on a new Blu and Ray. The film was entitled Five-Day Lover and was directed by Phillippe de Broca, starring Jean Seberg and some good French actors. I’m a big fan of Mr. de Broca, mainly due to his wonderful film That Man from Rio. I’d never seen this earlier film and it’s quite charming and delightful, and stunningly photographed in shimmering black-and-white. There’s a very good score by Georges Delerue, the transfer is beautiful and Jean Seberg has never been more beautiful than in this film. It’s not a great film, but I really enjoyed every minute of it.

After that, I went in the CD closet to see if I had any recordings of Five-Day Lover – there’s a brief six-minute suite on some compilation CD of Delerue so that was nice. But whilst looking around I came across a huge box set of Vladimir Cosma soundtracks. I’ve had this for over seven years, I think, and have never even opened the damn thing – it’s like seventeen CDs and fifty scores. Well, I’m a big fan of Mr. Cosma, so I pulled out three of the CDs and put them into iTunes and have been listening for the past couple of hours. Well, this is an amazing set (there has since been a second box set and a third is coming in about four weeks and I must pick those up at some point). If you’ve never heard Mr. Cosma’s music (you may have and just not realize it), you owe it to yourself to check him out. He’s an incredible melodist – his themes are brilliantly tuneful. You’ll be blissed out, I promise. Mr. Cosma’s most well known score here in the US is most likely Diva – but while that’s a great score, his other scores are even better. The first CD I uploaded was a double-header of My Father’s Glory and My Mother’s Castle – if you’ve never heard these scores, they’re as good as it gets, kind of desert island stuff. So, I’ve got some great listening ahead. He’s right up there with Michel Legrand in terms of wonderful tunes. I have no idea what the boxes are selling for these days, but they’re well worth seeking out and I think volume one can be had pretty reasonably. At some point I needed to eat something to get up to 1000 calories, and I didn’t feel like going to Gelson’s (you really cannot get out of that store for less than $25 and I’m a bit tired of spending that), so I had some of my frozen mini-tacos – I made eight of them (170 calories for four, so 340) – that didn’t quite get me up to 1000 but they filled me up and hit the spot.

Today, I have to do my final script revision, adding Hayley’s bit and then get that off to everyone, including our stage manager. Then I’ll eat something light but amusing, jog, and then at four we have two or three ALS rehearsals. After that, I’ll try to relax a bit.

Tomorrow is just all ALS stuff then a dinner, Saturday is the same, and Sunday will hopefully be somewhat relaxing and hopefully will include rehearsal and dinner with Hayley. And them Monday, I’ll probably get up at six-thirty so I can do a jog, then I’ll be on my way to the Pasadena Playhouse for my nine o’clock call and very long day.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do my final script revision, eat, jog, rehearse, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite films of Miss Hayley Mills? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, whilst I will finally get together with Hayley Mills, yay, yay, yay.
