THIRD TIME IS NOT THE CHARM

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, as unbelievable as it seems, we had, for the third time, a singer bail from next Sunday’s show. The truly odd part of this is it’s been the same track in the show each time. The first gal dropped out for work reasons, the second for family emergency reasons, and now the third gal has dropped out, purportedly for work reasons but I don’t buy that for even half-a-second. This was the performer I alluded to yesterday, who showed up without having even looked at her music, which she’s certainly had for over a week. She didn’t because she said that she thought we’d be going over everything and making decisions at the first rehearsal. Well, I’m not sure how you can make any decisions when you aren’t familiar with the song. And she told Doug she thought I was rude to her by saying, “The next girl will be perfect.” Um, no, that is not what I said – what I said was, jokingly, “You’ll be perfect on Thursday.” That is what I said. I would NEVER say anything like what she said I said to any singer or performer anywhere at anytime. So, why make with the lame excuses – just e-mail me and ask me if that’s what I said. I think what really happened is she realized she could not possibly be ready by Thursday and probably not by show day. I have now typed up a set of newbie rules so that anyone Doug asks to do the show must agree to each and every one so there can be no mistaking what is expected of them. Needless to say, I will never go anywhere near this person again. So, I’ve been scrambling to find a replacement who can learn and do two of the three songs (I’ll cut the third) – I’m waiting to hear back from three people, and hopefully one of them will be able to come in and save us.

Other than that sorry bit of business, yesterday was a perfectly okay day. I got eight hours of sleep, so that was nice. Once up, I prepared the eBlast for our new release, which, I’m thrilled to announce is the world premiere of the soundtrack to one of the most beloved films of all time – The Red Balloon. It’s taken from acetates, but has been cleaned up pretty well – it’s obviously not optimal like tape, but after sixty years it’s just nice to be able to issue it – it’s sounds pretty decent, too, as the restoration was done by the fellow who saved A Place in the Sun and It’s a Wonderful Life. I’ve had a tape of these acetates since the 1970s but up until now there was no way to save them. The companion score is Le Voyage en Ballon, a wonderful score to The Red Balloon director’s next film and his first feature-length film. I do think this is going to move very quickly, so don’t delay in placing your order. Full color booklet, too. Here’s the cover.

Then I had a nice lunch with Jenna Lea Rosen and her mum over at Casa Vega. I hadn’t seen them for quite a while so it was nice to catch up. I was a VERY good boy – one beef taco and one cheese enchilada and two bites of rice. Total calorie count was in the neighborhood of 550 calories at the most. After that, I came home, the helper came by and got invoices, and then Sami, her two friends Samantha and Sierra, and Sami’s mom came to show me the ography the girls had come up with for their trio. Some of it was ever so cute, and I added or changed about a third of it and they picked all that up very quickly. It’s such a cute number and they’re all cute as buttons.

After that, I did a two-and-a-half mile jog, got the news about the singer, and spent much of the evening trying to fix that. At some point, I went to Gelson’s and got some salad from their salad bar – just lettuce, tomatoes, some mushrooms, and a couple of olives. I got some red wine vinegar to dress it, and I bought some shrimp cocktail shrimp. I came home, put some shrimp in with the salad and ate that, and ate the rest of the shrimp with some cocktail sauce. All that food barely came to 300 calories, probably closer to 200, so, total for the day was well under 1000 but both meals were very filling. Oh, and that was with two tiny cookies that Jenna had baked – they were very good, and probably totaled 300 calories – still under 1000 when you factor in the jog. Always factor in the damn jog, baby. Then I took a shower and relaxed a bit.

Today, I’ll do a jog, hopefully pick up some packages, continue organizing the script for the ALS show and figuring out the show order, I’ll hopefully print out a LOT of orders, and then we have an ALS meeting at six, which is when I’ll eat.

Tomorrow we have one ALS rehearsal in the morning, and then the second Kritzerland rehearsal at three-thirty, after which I’ll grab a bite. Friday is all ALS stuff, Saturday is our stumble-through, and Sunday is sound check and show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, hopefully pick up packages, do ALS stuff, print out orders, and have a meeting and sup. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that the fourth time will be the charm, since the third time was definitely not the charm, singer-wise.
