WHEN REHEARSALS GO RIGHT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’m happy to say that rehearsal number two for the Kritzerland show went very well, one of the best second rehearsals we’ve ever had. First off, Bill Hayes was with us – he’s ninety-one years young and he’s simply amazing. He’s doing an obscure song called I Need Some Cooling Off, and then a quick version of Wait Till You See Her. I also got him to do the ALS show and, more importantly, got him to do Put on a Happy Face from Bye Bye Birdie – he starred in the national tour in 1961. Jenna Lea Rosen came after Bill and she already knows here stuff and she hadn’t had it for much longer than about eighteen hours. And the two songs are working well for her – Alby was happy and I was happy. The trio that Sami and her chums are doing is really good – tight three-part harmony they’ve got down pat, plus I had them come in with staging, and then I took that and finessed it and switched up some of it, and it looks great. Everybody else was completely prepared and doing great. I think it’s going to be a really fun show, and we only have about twenty seats left, so that’s good.

After, I had dinner with friends at Hugo’s. I had my little Caesar salad and my pasta papa, both excellent. The total calorie count for both was in the neighborhood of 1200 calories or so. And I jogged off 250 of that, so it was a great and filling meal that wasn’t a problem, calorie-wise, and it’s all I ate all day. After that, I came home, adjusted the Kritzerland show patter as I moved two things and added Bill Hayes’ second song, so that’s all conformed now.

Prior to that, I got nine hours of sleep and then spent too much time dealing with a complete annoyance that was completely annoying. I did the two-and-a-half mile jog, did some work on the computer and then had Reagan Pasternak over to do her song for the ALS show – she’s doing the big song from Waitress, which, I must say, I just don’t get. People seem to like it a lot and maybe it works in the show, but for me it just drones on and one, just repeating the same three chords over and over again, and they’re just not interesting chords. But what do I know. And then we had our Kritzerland rehearsal.

After adjusting the patter I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched episode two of Stranger Things. These writer/directors are so in love with the two Stephens, King and Spielberg, that there’s a feeling of déjà vu through many of the scenes, especially the ET stuff in episode two. The young person who plays the mysterious girl is really good. But as with episode one, the dialogue for the kids is just horrendous. But it’s enjoyable in its own way, so I’ll keep watching, I guess.

Today and tonight is all ALS stuff. I have to finish doing the script and making a show order – it’s really challenging at times, but the time is nigh and I must buckle down, Winscocki and do it. There’s also an ALS phone meeting at some point. I’ll do a jog and I’ll eat something light but amusing at some point, I’m sure.

Tomorrow, I must be up early because she of the Evil Eye will arrive all too soon. I’ll do my jog right then, then I’ll do some errands and whatnot, then come home. At two, Jenna gets here just to run her two songs again, and then we do our stumble-through at three. I’m sure some of us will grab a bite to eat afterwards, and then I must relax for the rest of the evening. Sunday, I’ll relax until it’s time for sound check, and then we have our show. We’ll go out after for some food, too. Then come Monday we have the very busy week leading up to the ALS show, with several rehearsals and finalizing the script and running order. I have to do my diagrams of entrances and exits early in the week, too. I also have a couple of meetings and some meals to do, but basically it’s all stuff for the ALS show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do ALS stuff, jog, eat, and do ALS stuff. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, Kritzerland stuff. Blu-ray, Miss Sadie Thompson. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a rehearsal gone right.
