LATT’S DO IT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle reading Oliver Twist in Latvian. Or to translate that entire opening sentence into Lativan: Šonedēļ peld ar, piemēram, gazeļu lasījumā Oliver Twist latviešu. Or, as Cole Porter wrote, LATT’s Fall in Love. We don’t allow groaning here at haineshisway.com. I don’t know where Monday went – it was here and gone in but what seemed like a moment, which, in Latvian is Es nezinu, kur pirmdiena gāja – tas bija šeit, un aizgājuši, bet ko likās brīdi. Or, as we like to say here in the City of Studio, Bye Bye Bridi. Where was I? Oh, yes, I don’t know where Monday went because I never stopped doing and going and going and doing for even a momemt or even a moment for that or any other matter.

I got about seven hours of sleep – I didn’t fall asleep until three and was up at eleven. Once up, I had lots of e-mails to answer, plus I had a telephonic conversation or two. Then I went and had a chili, cheese, and onion omelet and an English muffin for my meal o’ the day. After that, I picked up a little package and then came back home. I immediately buckled down, Winsocki, and began writing liner notes for the new Sherman Brothers CD. In fact, I finished them all up, did the track listing, let Richard Sherman read the notes, made about four tiny changes that he asked for, and then sent that in. I got the three orchestral tracks, cleaned up by my audio restoration guy, so that’s done. Then I decided that we’ll announce this title next Monday. We’ll probably have finished CDs by the second week of October, I should think. I then did more work on one other upcoming release and got that out of the way. Meanwhile, Richard called back and told me he’d found a cassette with three more songs for one of the three things on our CD, so he’ll come today and play them for me. I had to then buy a portable USB cassette player to transfer the cassette into the computer via Garageband as we did for the vinyl transfer.

I also heard from Stephen Flaherty – I’d asked if he had anything we could do from the latest Flaherty and Ahrens original musical, Little Dancer and he sent me an absolutely wonderful song, so I removed a duet from the show and gave Kim Huber this new solo and I gave her husband, with whom she was doing the duet, a solo from a show that wasn’t represented in our show, The Glorious Ones. I do think we have at least one song from just about everything they’ve written, so that’s fun. After that, I did the shorter jog, then went to Gelson’s and got four drumettes and a tiny bit of lobster salad for my snack. I also got some Pop Chips (sour cream and onion) and some pretzels – those will be my snacks for the rest of the week – much better than getting stuff from Gelson’s every night. Then I ate my drumettes and lobster salad whilst sitting on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I began watching a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Return of Godzilla aka Godzilla ’84, which was released here in the US as Godzilla ’85, but in a much shortened version with additional footage and bad dubbing. This is the first legitimate release for this original version, and much like the original Godzilla, this original Japanese version is very different than the American recut. I’m only thirty minutes in so I’ll wait until I finish it, but I will say the transfer is VERY mediocre, or at least the master provided to this label is VERY mediocre. After that, I did some more work on the computer, had two long telephonic calls, and that was that.

Today, I have a lot of stuff to do, and I’ll also eat and hopefully my USB cassette recorder will be here by two, as that’s when Richard Sherman will be over to play the cassette. He’s leaving it up to me as to whether to use the three songs, but if he wants them I don’t see why not. I have to finish the other sets of liner notes, I have to do a show order and begin writing the commentary, and then at some point I’ll jog, and hopefully relax.

Tomorrow I have an hour work session for the Kritzerland show, followed by a lunch, and then the rest of the week is meetings and meals and going and doing and doing and going as well as doing. And going.

I can also announce the cast of The Brain from Planet X’s tenth-anniversary staged concert benefit. Returning to the roles they created in the original 2006 production are Alet Taylor as Yoni, Cason Murphy as fellow alien Zubrick, and Lauren Rubin as perfect housewife Joyce Bunson. And playing The Brain will be Barry Pearl, who played it in the NYMF production in New York. Newcomers are Marc Ginsburg as Fred Bunson, Sami Staitman as Donna Bunson, Robert Yacko as the Narrator/Professor Leder, and John Massey as General Mills. Still to be cast are Donna’s beatnik boyfriend Rod and Private Partz, as well as the rest of the ensemble, which I’ll announce when the entire ensemble is cast.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do stuff, eat, hopefully pick up my new USB cassette player (you’d be shocked how damn cheap these things are – I got an ION, the same brand as my USB turntable), have a visit with Richard Sherman, get the new songs to the audio restoration guy, write, do a show order, jog, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite Japanese motion pictures of all genres? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have written some of the notes in Latvian, which in Latvian is Pieņemsim, ir slodzes jauki piedāvājumi, ir mums, bet es hit ceļu uz sapņu, laimīgs ir rakstīts dažas piezīmes latviešu valodā.
