THE FUN FIRST REHEARSAL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us a fun first Kritzerland rehearsal. I have to say this is one of the very few shows we’ve done where I don’t intimately know the material. In fact, a lot of what we’re doing is new to me, and frankly that’s kind of a breath of fresh air. Flaherty and Ahrens’ songs are really good, whether dramatic, touching, or funny. We began with Brittney Bertier, who ran her two solos, Princess (from A Man of No Importance) and Times Like This (from Lucky Stiff). Then her pal Nick Tubbs showed up – he’s new to us and I quite liked him. First they ran their duet, Funny/The Duck Joke (from My Favorite Year), and the he ran his two solos, Larger than Life (also My Favorite Year) and Lucky (Lucky Stiff again). Then came the Befeler family – Kim Huber, daughter Paige, and hubby Roger. Kim went first, running her three solos – Raining (from Rocky), Looking Back at Myself (from Little Dancer), and then Back to Before (from Ragtime). She sounded great, and I’m really liking Raining and the Little Dancer song, which I got from Steve Flaherty directly.

Then came Paige Befeler. She’s done two other Kritzerland shows and I’ve known her since she was ten (she’s sixteen now). Well, she kind of bowled me over – so assured, great voice, poised, and really knows what she’s singing about. First she sang Journey to the Past from Anastasia and then Notice Me, Horton from Seussical. Then it was Roger’s turn and he ran his three solos – I Was Here (from The Glorious Ones), If Life Were Like the Movies (from My Favorite Year), and then The Streets of Dublin (from A Man of No Importance).

Then last we had Jenna Gillespie, new to us, and really good. She did her three solos – Waiting for Life (from Once on this Island), Come Down from the Tree (cut from Once on this Island), and Your Daddy’s Son (from Ragtime). Still to come, Hadley Miller on Thursday, and Cathy Rigby and company on show day. It feels like a really good show to me, and I could tell that the show order will work really well.

After we finished, I did the shorter jog. I couldn’t do it earlier because we had us a 104-degree day, a real scorcher as they say. Then I just did some work on the computer and listened to music and relaxed, which is one and too many but I didn’t feel like doing a comma. Oh well.

Prior to all that, I got about seven hours of sleep – I would have gotten eight, but there came a knocking at my door at nine-fifteen. I’d forgotten that my neighbor was coming over with a fence person to talk about the new fence that will be put in to replace the very damaged one that’s there. I like my neighbor and his wife very much – I’ve really only met them a couple of months ago, even though they’ve lived next door for about five years now. Go know. I was completely groggy and incoherent and I’m sure they thought I was on drugs or something.

They left and I printed out a nice amount of orders for the new CD, and we sold some signed copies too, which was good. Certainly we haven’t had as good a release day as this in probably a year, and that says something about the Sherman Brothers. Then I went and had an egg salad sandwich and some fries, about eight hundred calories of food, maybe nine hundred. That was good, then I came home and had to put on the air conditioning. I printed out more orders and then it was time to get ready for our rehearsal.

Today, first up is a Costco run, then I’ll eat something, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, I’ll jog at some point (when will depend on the heat), I’ll begin the final set of liner notes, hopefully pick up packages, and then relax. I may have a little meeting later in the evening, we shall see.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, our second Kritzerland rehearsal, more meetings and meals, our stumble-through, and then it’s sound check and show. Then it’s directly on to the next Kritzerland show and getting ready for The Brain concert. We’re currently at 89% on our Indiegogo, so just 11% more and we’re there, and then it would be nice to cover the fees, too. I’ll become relentless when we get to seven days left.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a Costco run (I’m out of EVERYTHING), eat, hopefully pick up packages, jog, write, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What period in fashion is your favorite? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a fun first rehearsal.
