THE ONSET OF ON SET

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, at what point did they start saying “on set” instead of “on THE set?” When was the onset of “on set?” I read every day actors saying, “I’m on set” or “On set for this or that.” What, it’s too hard to say on THE set? We never said on set in my day. In fact, I never heard that expression until a few years ago. It’s idiotic, if you ask me. And they say it even when they’re on location. If you’re in the studio or on the backlot just talk like a normal person, will ya? Today I’m on the set for a new show, a new movie, a new job. On THE set. I know the today thing is to abbreviate everything but I care not for such things. Or, today I’m on location for a new film. The next person I catch saying on set will get a withering stare or post response from me. I’ve already been on my high and low horse about it and have actually gotten a couple of people to say it correctly. On set is ridiculous, you actor people, so knock it off. What the HELL am I talking about? I have to write some notes because she of the evil eye will be here all too soon and I have to get up an hour before that so shave and shower. Then I have to tell her to work quickly and to do the living room first so that when I come back at eleven I can quickly set up everything for our stumble-through. I’m hoping she can get everything done by the time we start.

Yesterday was a rather interesting day. For starters I got eight hours of sleep, so that was good. No telephonic ringing in the morning, thank goodness. Once up, I answered e-mails and was surprised to see a bunch of Amazon orders. So obviously since I had said nothing to anyone people were finding our cheaper CDs (cheaper than the inflated prices the gougers are charging), so that was fun. I put up a notice on the Film Score Monthly message board, then did some writing and organizing. And suddenly the Amazon orders started coming like crazy. It was amazing, really. I should have done this ages ago and I don’t really know why I didn’t. All I had on Amazon prior to yesterday were the titles we actually own. So, every month or so I’d get something like twenty to sixty bucks, maybe. Well, by the end of the evening yesterday we’d had almost a thousand bucks in orders. Who knew? And as soon as the helper gets me a complete stock check I can put up some other titles. May it continue every day.

I did a two-and-a-half mile jog, and then finally at five I met some folks for an early dinner. I had a turkey sandwich and a few fries (I thought I deserved a few fries). Then we came back here for a bit, they left, and I printed out lots more Amazon orders. Then I did stuff on the computer, listened to music, did a security update and a Word update (so fast on the new computer) and that was that.

Today, I’ll be up at eight to shave and shower, then she of the Evil Eye will be here and I’ll go do some stuff and return at eleven. I’ll set up the room for our stumble-through and people should start arriving at eleven-fifteen. Then we do the stumble-through, I’ll give some notes, and then some of us will grab a bite to eat. Then I’ll relax for the rest of the day and evening, although at some point I’ll do a jog. I think I’ve actually been having some allergy problems so I’ve got to protect my voice for the show.

Tomorrow, I’ll relax until it’s time for sound check and then we do the show. I will, of course, have a full report. Monday I do the little film music birthday concert thing – I leave for that at four and show time is seven. The rest of the week is meetings and meals and going and doing and hopefully having all this bank fraud crap finally resolved.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up early, do things, have a stumble-through, eat, jog, hopefully pick up packages, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Are there any sayings or bon mots that drive you up the wall like “on set” does to me? Let’s hear them. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping I never hear the expression “on set” again.
