THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE MISSING FOLDER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was The Curious Case of the Disappearing Folder. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it was The Curious Case of the Disappearing Folder. There I was, merrily working away on the computer. I went to my folder on my desktop, as I always do, since that’s where all my documents and PDFs and stuff reside – it’s conveniently called Bruce’s Folder. I had to go into the Kritzerland music folder, which is within Bruce’s Folder. I got what I needed from there and attached it to an e-mail, then put a piece of music sitting on my desktop inside that folder. Then I closed out of that and went about my business, when I happened to glance to where my folder resides on my desktop – and it was – not there. Where once there was a folder and always has been a folder there was nothing. I looked all over the desktop to see if it had somehow moved somewhere else all by its lonesome. But no, it was gone with the wind. I immediately went to “Spotlight” and searched for it and it was there so I knew I hadn’t “lost” it. I could also see it by using the “Go” icon and going to “Recent folders” – it was there and I could open it, but I couldn’t get it back on my desktop. So, I went directly to Google to see if this had happened to anyone else and, of course, it had – there were several threads about it on several message boards, and the solutions “experts” were offering were so mind-bogglingly stupid I couldn’t believe it. I mean, I know nothing and I knew they were stupid. So, I went to Apple support and had them call me. I got a woman on the phone who had laryngitis so I could barely hear or understand her, and she was asking so many questions that I just got annoyed and told her to please get me a senior tech person. She graciously did and I got a great gal on the phone and she had me go to Finder and Documents and there was my folder and from there I could easily drag it to my desktop, so that problem was solved. Whew.

But being a good proactive senior tech, she had me look at a sidebar menu where only my hard drive should have shown up, but there was some weird PC thing listed there – so she had me go somewhere else and from there we nuked whatever the HELL that was. She said she saw the exact same thing yesterday on someone’s computer – she thinks it’s some weird glitch. But to be safe she had me download some malware checker and we ran a check and everything came up roses. So, I’m not sure the actual Curious Case of the Disappearing Folder was actually solved, but all’s well that ends well and wells end that’s all.

I’d gotten seven hours of sleep again, got up, answered e-mails and printed out only a couple of orders (slow order day, but we sold a Welcome to My World song folio, and that always makes me happy), then I went and did some banking, then had a sandwich and a few fries – one can order a small side of fries with any sandwich for a nominal charge, and I only ate about a third of what was on the plate. Frankly, I’m kind of over fries right now – I thought I’d enjoy them, but despite Jerry’s Deli having really good fries, they just didn’t appeal to me that much, which, I must say, was odd. After that I picked up one package and then came home.

Then I decided to do some iTunes house cleaning, since I’ve been adding so much wonderful music. I went through everything, deleting maybe 1000 songs that I never listen to, naming things that weren’t named and labeling things so I could find them more easily. All the while I listened to more wonderful music. You’ll remember a few days I’d uploaded some music by Gerald Finzi, and English composer whose music I remember loving. I kind of grabbed the first CD to hit my eye and it had his Clarinet Concerto, which I know I was fond of. But hearing the music I was not taken with any of it. It just didn’t engage me. Well, since then I found a Lyrita CD of Finzi music and what a difference great sound and a great conductor make, in this case said conductor being the brilliant Sir Adrian Boult, one of the greatest twentieth century conductors and one who really knew and understood his Brit music. Two of the pieces were the same as I’d uploaded the other day and I still had them on the computer so I could A/B them – the Boult sounds amazing, you can hear all of the orchestral color and detail, while the other performance has a conductor with no actual feeling for the music he’s conducting, and the sound is so distant and boring that it becomes distant and boring music that simply doesn’t engage the ear. So, I’m really glad I found the Lyrita CD and I’m equally glad it proves my memory of loving this music was correct.

I also did some writing, and a lot of Brain work. I wasn’t in the mood for a motion picture, so I did a two-and-a-half mile jog, then just relaxed for the rest of the evening, with an occasional telephonic call.

Today is more of the same, whatever the same is. We got through yesterday without major irritants, so please keep those most excellent vibes and xylophones coming my way. I’ll do a jog, hopefully pick up packages, write, and then am attending a belated birthday dinner.

Tomorrow and the weekend is unknown to me but as soon as I know you’ll know and as soon as you know I’ll know. Did you know that know spelled backwards is wonk?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do more of the same, jog, write, hopefully pick up packages, and sup. Today’s topic of discussion: What is the scariest and most baffling computer incident you’ve ever had? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that Bruce’s Folder is back where it belongs even though we didn’t really solve The Curious Case of the Disappearing Folder.
